Where can you find antimacassar on an airplane?

A paper or cloth napkin placed on the top of the seats of airplanes, trains and buses has a name - antimacassar. It comes from the palm or coconut oil-based Macassar oil used by men in Victorian England to style their hair.

As the fashion for this ointment spread, housewives began to cover armchairs and sofas with pieces of washable fabric so that the upholstery of furniture does not get dirty.

Soon antimacassars appeared in theaters, and then in public transport.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

Why can't you create a folder named con on Windows?

On Windows, you cannot create a folder named "con" in the usual way. Many sites claim that this is a personal desire of Bill Gates, who was teased as a child with such a word (which supposedly means "nerd"). In fact, everything is simpler: this limitation dates back to the days of the MS-DOS operating system. There, "con" along with other similar designations (prn, aux, nul) was reserved for I/O device designations, so you can't create folders with those names.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Long-term use of ibuprofen is dangerous for men 23.02.2018

Few pills we take as often as painkillers. Therefore, of course, I would like to know how they still act on the body - in addition to relieving pain. In this sense, the study of employees of the University of Copenhagen and their colleagues from Denmark and France about ibuprofen seems rather disappointing: it turned out that it has a bad effect on the male endocrine system.

The experiment involved several dozen young men aged 18 to 35 years, who were randomly divided into two groups: one was given 44 mg of ibuprofen for 600 days, the other took a placebo dummy for the same period. All this time, the level of luteinizing hormone (lutropin), which enters the blood from the pituitary gland, was measured in the experimental subjects. The work of the reproductive system depends on the luteinizing hormone: in women it stimulates the synthesis of estrogen in the ovaries, in men it stimulates the synthesis of testosterone in the testes. If a man’s testosterone becomes low, the pituitary gland tries to compensate for the lack and releases more luteinizing hormone into the blood. So, if we see that its level is increased, then something is wrong with testosterone.

In men who took ibuprofen, after two weeks, the level of lutropin increased. Generally speaking, this situation is quite normal for older men, whose testosterone activity of the testes gradually decreases. The participants in the experiment, judging by the hormones, were about seventy, but in fact they were young people.

The researchers even managed to take tissue samples from the testes of men after ibuprofen - however, it’s worth mentioning right away that in this case, samples were taken from people who were in a coma. So it was possible to find out that the painkiller suppresses the synthesis of testosterone directly in the testicles.
