Why can't an ostrich fly?

In the air, the force of gravity is felt stronger than on the ground. This is because the air does not support the weight very well. Only small birds can fly by flapping their wings, because this requires highly developed pectoral muscles. Big birds don't have that many muscles. Therefore, giant birds cannot fly at all. This includes rhea ostriches from South America, emus from Australia, and a few others. They are too heavy to fly. There is not a single giant flying bird.

Is the ostrich a giant? Absolutely yes! It is the largest living bird. An adult ostrich reaches 2 meters, and sometimes 2,5 meters in height. It weighs from 70 to 135 kg! But birds that can't fly make up for it with incredible speed when running. It is believed that the ostrich runs faster than all birds. He has long, strong, thick legs, and he can run through the desert faster than an Arabian horse.

Some people claim to have seen an ostrich run at 80 km/h. But biologists believe that the fastest ostriches can run at speeds of 45 to 60 km/h. And it's really very fast. The stride length of an ostrich when running can reach 8,5 m.

What photographer kept filming a volcanic eruption knowing he was going to die?

In 1980, there was a powerful eruption of the St. Helens volcano, located in the northwestern United States. Photographer Robert Landsburg, knowing in advance about the approaching activation of the volcano, visited the area around for several weeks to capture the phases of its change. On the morning of May 18, when the eruption itself began, he was several kilometers from the summit and realized from the rapidly approaching cloud of smoke that he would not have time to escape. Without any panic, Landsburg continued to take pictures, then packed the camera into a backpack and covered it with his body, which was found under a layer of ash 17 days later. Nothing happened to the camera, and the shots taken helped geologists to compile a complete documentary description of the eruption.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Magnetic bracelets don't work 05.09.2006

According to the British Medical Journal, magnetic bracelets are ineffective - at least not for relieving arthritis.

If a small positive effect exists, it is only because of suggestion and self-hypnosis. The authors of the study indicate that if magnetic fields affected a person, then some changes would be noted in patients exposed to strong magnetic fields when examined on a nuclear magnetic tomograph.

Meanwhile, "treatment" with a magnetic bracelet distracts the patient from effective methods and makes him waste time.
