Are Seaweeds Healthy?

Wherever there is sea water, seaweed can be found. They exist in a wide variety and belong to a large group of plants called algae - these are plants, but without leaves, stems, roots and flowers. But they also contain a green pigment called chlorophyll. Therefore, they can produce their own food. The reason these plants are not green in color is that chlorophyll is often taken up by other pigments, which is why some seaweeds are brown or red.

In the temperate zone, brown algae are most common. They grow in layers between the high and low tides, and have bubble floaters that children love to squash between their fingers. These plants are attached to stones with hook-shaped roots.

Another well known sea grass is kelp. It has different forms. In most cases, it is a long, flat, dense, blade-like grass that is attached to rocks with a stiff stem. Along the coast of the Atlantic Ocean, some of these algae reach 6 m in length, and the giant kelp of the Pacific Ocean is even longer. This brown alga belongs to the species that are used by humans, for example, to fertilize the soil, because they have a high concentration of potassium carbonate. They also serve as a source of iodine.

Another useful type of seaweed is Irish moss. It is quite rough and tough, like leather. It releases large amounts of agar-agar, a colorless jelly-like substance. In the East, tons of red seaweed are dried and eaten. They are not very nutritious, but contain a large amount of agar-agar. They are used as an additive in soups and to give density to other dishes.

Seaweed is also the main food source for ocean dwellers. The little sea creatures feed on them and in turn become food for the big ones. Seaweed releases oxygen and this helps keep the water clean. So, you see why seaweed is considered beneficial to humans.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

Telescopic eye lens 04.07.2013

A team of US and Swiss researchers funded by DARPA has developed telescopic contact lenses that can switch between normal vision and "zoom" vision - with magnification. The work is led by Professor Joseph Ford of the University of California San Diego. According to him, he and his colleagues create ultra-thin lenses, primarily to help sick people, although military funding clearly makes it clear who else needs such a super-useful device on the battlefield as contact lenses-binoculars.

However, such contact lenses can help solve vision problems for many people suffering from age-related macular degeneration (AMD). This disease is the leading cause of blindness among the elderly because, with simple glasses, the consequences of this disease cannot be corrected due to damage to the retina. A contact lens with magnification can direct light to undamaged areas of the retina, which dramatically improves the quality of vision. Until now, there have been no such devices - bulky implantable experimental telescopes can hardly be called a solution to the AMD problem.

A new type of contact lens, developed by Ford's team, uses a mirror that fits tightly around the eye, which is the main component of a tiny telescope. The contact lens allows you to look without magnification, and also provides a magnification of 2,8 times. So far, switching is provided with the help of special glasses, which were originally designed to view a three-dimensional picture on a 3D TV. The liquid crystals in the lenses of these glasses change the polarization of the light, which allows the light to be directed to different parts of the contact lenses.

Tests have shown that original contact lenses provide a clear picture with a large field of view. So far, the color-correction grooves on the lens slightly degrade image quality and contrast, so the scientists plan to use a more efficient and comfortable-to-wear gas-permeable material with a special profile. This will allow the start of human trials of the lenses. Note that the development of these binocular contact lenses is funded by the American defense science agency DARPA under the SCENICC (Soldier Centric Imaging with Computational Cameras) program.
