What is radiation?

In its most general form, radiation is the propagation of waves of energy. You are familiar with this phenomenon from early childhood, although you did not know what it was. When you hold your hand in front of a hot stove, or a radiator, or a light bulb, you feel the heat radiate. When you sit in the sun, radiation called "ultraviolet rays" affects your skin. These are all examples of electromagnetic radiation.

The other main type of radiation is called radioactive radiation. It comes from radioactive materials or nuclear reactions. Radiation emits particles and waves of energy. Since electromagnetic radiation is the propagation of waves of energy, we should know something about these waves. The distance between the waves is called the wavelength. The number of waves passing through a given point per second is called the frequency. And we will call a group of waves in a certain range of wavelengths a spectrum.

The group with the shortest wavelength is called the X-ray spectrum. Then comes the ultraviolet spectrum. Behind it is the spectrum of visible light, the waves of which we see. In the next range, the waves get longer and we can no longer see them. This is the infrared spectrum.

Even longer wavelengths are used in radio, television, and radar. Where is the source of these waves? In some cases, machines are needed to create them, in others they are obtained in nature. Natural waves come, for example, from the Sun. In order to cause radiation, energy is needed. As for the Sun, energy is created here as a result of a thermonuclear reaction. And to get X-rays, the target must be bombarded with particles.

Radioactive radiation is the process of change or decay that certain elements undergo. Such chemical elements are called radioactive. They emit particles (and waves) as a result of the splitting of the nuclei of their atoms.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

What religious organization enrolled Homer and Bart Simpson into their ranks?

The official Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano called Homer and Bart Simpson true Catholics, although Homer tries his best to hide this. The publication supports this conclusion by the fact that the Simpsons pray before meals and believe, albeit in their own way, in the afterlife, and also by the fact that Homer Simpson constantly snores at Reverend Lovejoy's Sunday sermons, which take place in the Presbyterian church.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Vibration meter on ARM processor 04.02.2015

The BeagleBone Black board with an AM335x processor (ARM Cortex-A8, 1 GHz) was used as the basis for the DT7837 module by the designers of Data Translation. The module, according to its creators, is the first vibration meter on an ARM processor.

Basically, the DT7837 is a noise and vibration signal analyzer that uses an ARM processor to process the data. The module has four 24-bit IEPE input channels that can be read at a sampling rate of 102,4 ksample per second. The device runs under the open operating system Linux 3.12, which is available to customers in the form of source codes. This allows you to tailor the module to the requirements of a specific task and create specialized applications for embedded solutions based on the DT7837. The module is said to be well suited for precise measurements using microphones, accelerometers and other transducers with a wide dynamic range.

The DT7837 also includes a 24-bit DAC output, general purpose I/O lines, counters/timers, and other peripherals. They are accessed by calling API functions.

Prices for the DT7837 are configuration dependent and start at $1995.
