Why does ice break pipes?

Many students complain: "Why should I teach physics and science, because I never use them." Such people are, of course, wrong about the "uselessness" of physics and the natural sciences. What is certain is that (whether we know it or not) we all repeatedly use the laws of physics in everyday life.

Any person living in a climate with cold winters knows that they must pour antifreeze into the radiator of their car and drain water from all pipes where it may remain. He knows that if he does not do this, then cracks will appear in the radiator, and pipes may burst. The laws of physics explain why this can happen.

For example, most substances in the transition from a liquid to a solid state decrease in volume. But the exact opposite happens with water! Instead of decreasing in volume, it expands, and increases in volume not by as much as you like, but by about one ninth. This means that if you have nine liters of water and that water freezes, you will have 10 liters of solid ice! Now imagine that water freezes in a radiator or in a pipe. Ten liters of ice require more space than nine liters of water. But radiator tubes or water pipes cannot stretch. There is simply no more room for them. Therefore, when the water freezes, it wins more space for itself, breaking the pipes.

One of the most remarkable aspects of this natural phenomenon is its enormous power. As far as you know, pipes are made of fairly durable metals. In Finland, for example, this force is forced to work. It is done in this way. In quarries, cracks in the rocks are filled with water and left to freeze. Freezing water acts as a wedge, and due to the force of freezing water, huge rock masses break up into separate stone blocks. Although ice takes up more space than water, it is lighter than water and floats on its surface. Therefore, large volumes of water never completely freeze. The ice cover on top protects the water below it from freezing.

What is the Renaissance?

Do you know what the word "Renaissance" means? This is the French word for "Renaissance". The Renaissance is the Renaissance that took place in Europe from the XNUMXth to the XNUMXth century. In the Middle Ages, which preceded the Renaissance, many things in life were rejected. During the Renaissance, education revived, trade, art, music, literature and science flourished.

The Renaissance changed the whole way of life in Europe. Until that time, people lived in large estates, estates. There were very few cities. All social life was concentrated in knight's castles or bishops' palaces. Europe was divided into countless little states, each ruled by a prince or duke.

During the Renaissance, life changed completely. In connection with the development of trade, industry and commerce, cities grew rapidly. Wealthy merchants became very important. Instead of numerous small states, large ones arose. Nations began to form. People started minting money. Faith has also been questioned. People became more interested in the events in the world and less concerned about the afterlife. A rebellion arose against the foundations and ideas of the Roman Catholic Church, a reformation movement appeared, which led to the establishment of the Protestant religion.

The Renaissance did not come about suddenly, although it is sometimes associated with 1453, the year Constantinople fell to the Turks, or 1440, when printing was invented. Nevertheless, over the centuries, the forces that contributed to the emergence of the Renaissance grew.

The Renaissance reached its highest development, first in Italy, and then spread to other European countries. A large group of great artists appeared in Italy, among them Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael, Botticelli, Cellini and others, whose work we admire to this day.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Double carbon batteries 14.06.2014

The Japanese company Power Japan Plus has announced a breakthrough development in the field of rechargeable batteries. The development, called "Ryden", has double carbon contacts, and in terms of energy consumption it corresponds to lithium-ion batteries. At the same time, new batteries are superior to lithium-ion batteries in terms of safety and service life.

The technology, patented by Power Japan Plus, describes a battery design in which both the anode and cathode are made of carbon and an organic electrolyte is used. Positively charged lithium ions move towards the anode, negatively charged anions move towards the cathode, the electric current flow distance in the battery and the charging rate are higher than in common lithium-ion cells.

A new battery can withstand 3 charge and discharge cycles. The development is notable for its significant performance - the battery charges 20 times faster than lithium-ion batteries at a comparable energy density. Compared with other advanced battery technologies rated at 4V and above, the new battery is more powerful. The developers have also managed to achieve heat transfer losses, eliminating the risk associated with the risk of explosion and fire.

The production technology of the novelty is fully adapted to the existing production lines for conventional batteries and does not require significant changes to the equipment.

The new battery is free of rare earth, precious and heavy metals, which not only makes production, use and disposal extremely safe for the environment, but also greatly facilitates production logistics. In the production of such batteries, dependence on the political and economic situation in the world metal market is reduced. The company plans to switch to fully organic carbon in order to optimize its environmental impact, and in addition to receive 3 more patents for its development.

"The new generation of batteries delivers high performance but compromises on reliability, safety and cost. Our Rayden dual carbon design strikes a balance in all of these areas and outperforms existing batteries," said Power Japan Plus CTO Kaname Takeya.
