Why does ice break pipes? Detailed answer Directory / Big encyclopedia. Questions for quiz and self-education Did you know? Why does ice break pipes? Many students complain: "Why should I teach physics and science, because I never use them." Such people are, of course, wrong about the "uselessness" of physics and the natural sciences. What is certain is that (whether we know it or not) we all repeatedly use the laws of physics in everyday life. Any person living in a climate with cold winters knows that they must pour antifreeze into the radiator of their car and drain water from all pipes where it may remain. He knows that if he does not do this, then cracks will appear in the radiator, and pipes may burst. The laws of physics explain why this can happen. For example, most substances in the transition from a liquid to a solid state decrease in volume. But the exact opposite happens with water! Instead of decreasing in volume, it expands, and increases in volume not by as much as you like, but by about one ninth. This means that if you have nine liters of water and that water freezes, you will have 10 liters of solid ice! Now imagine that water freezes in a radiator or in a pipe. Ten liters of ice require more space than nine liters of water. But radiator tubes or water pipes cannot stretch. There is simply no more room for them. Therefore, when the water freezes, it wins more space for itself, breaking the pipes. One of the most remarkable aspects of this natural phenomenon is its enormous power. As far as you know, pipes are made of fairly durable metals. In Finland, for example, this force is forced to work. It is done in this way. In quarries, cracks in the rocks are filled with water and left to freeze. Freezing water acts as a wedge, and due to the force of freezing water, huge rock masses break up into separate stone blocks. Although ice takes up more space than water, it is lighter than water and floats on its surface. Therefore, large volumes of water never completely freeze. The ice cover on top protects the water below it from freezing. Author: Likum A. Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia: What is the Renaissance? Do you know what the word "Renaissance" means? This is the French word for "Renaissance". The Renaissance is the Renaissance that took place in Europe from the XNUMXth to the XNUMXth century. In the Middle Ages, which preceded the Renaissance, many things in life were rejected. During the Renaissance, education revived, trade, art, music, literature and science flourished. The Renaissance changed the whole way of life in Europe. Until that time, people lived in large estates, estates. There were very few cities. All social life was concentrated in knight's castles or bishops' palaces. Europe was divided into countless little states, each ruled by a prince or duke. During the Renaissance, life changed completely. In connection with the development of trade, industry and commerce, cities grew rapidly. Wealthy merchants became very important. Instead of numerous small states, large ones arose. Nations began to form. People started minting money. Faith has also been questioned. People became more interested in the events in the world and less concerned about the afterlife. A rebellion arose against the foundations and ideas of the Roman Catholic Church, a reformation movement appeared, which led to the establishment of the Protestant religion. The Renaissance did not come about suddenly, although it is sometimes associated with 1453, the year Constantinople fell to the Turks, or 1440, when printing was invented. Nevertheless, over the centuries, the forces that contributed to the emergence of the Renaissance grew. The Renaissance reached its highest development, first in Italy, and then spread to other European countries. A large group of great artists appeared in Italy, among them Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael, Botticelli, Cellini and others, whose work we admire to this day.
