How correctly did Jules Verne predict the circumstances of the first flight to the moon?

In 1865, the French writer Jules Verne published the novel "From the Earth to the Moon" - 103 years before the first real manned flight to the moon.

The predictions made in this book are amazing. Thus, the crew of the fictitious projectile (like the crews of the American Apollo spacecraft) consisted of three people. J. Verne chose Florida as the launch site and placed the "cosmodrome" not far from Cape Canaveral. He correctly indicated the initial velocity of the projectile required to break away from the earth's gravity.

In the next volume, entitled "Around the Moon," J. Verne described the effect of weightlessness and even depicted the descent of a spacecraft engulfed in flames in the Earth's atmosphere and its splashdown in the Pacific Ocean - while only 5 kilometers from the place where Apollo splashed down in 1969 -11", returned from the moon.

How was a simple merchant connected to the beginning and end of the American Civil War?

The first episode of hostilities in the US Civil War took place on July 21, 1861 in the state of Virginia, on the farm of the wholesaler Wilmer McLean - the northerners fired artillery at the house where the headquarters of the Confederate Army General Beauregard was located. Two years later, McLean moved his family 200 km to the south, and on April 9, 1865, the military knocked on his new house and asked him to use it as a place for signing the act of surrender of the southerners in the person of General Lee to the commander of the northerners, Ulysses Grant. This gave McLean reason to claim that the Civil War began in his backyard and ended in his living room.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. Bee beacon 19.11.2006

To track the flight of insects, they have long tried to use radar. But at low altitude, typical for insect flight, radio waves are reflected from plants, buildings, and uneven terrain. The signal reflected from a small target is lost in interference.

British experts suggested using the so-called transponder for tracking insects - a wire-antenna with a semiconductor diode included in it. When this device is exposed to radio waves, it emits a wave twice the frequency. By the way, the work of stickers is based on this principle, which does not allow you to take out an unpaid purchase from the store.

The transponder weighs a few milligrams and does not interfere with the flight at all.
