How are Amazon ants different from other ants?

Amazons are called a species of ants that do not themselves perform any work in the nest: ants of other species work for them.

Future Amazon slaves are abducted from nests at the pupal stage. The ants that emerged from the pupae perceive the nest of the kidnappers as their own, and the "slave owners" as equal members of their colony. Without any coercion, they perform all the work in the nest: they build new chambers, take care of the larvae, and get food for themselves and their "masters".

The Amazons themselves do absolutely nothing but attack, tear, kill, they do not know how. Moreover, the Amazons are not even able to protect the nest if necessary (the same "slaves" do it for them). However, during the next campaign for the pupae, the Amazons turn into formidable warriors.

From a hundred to a thousand Amazons take part in the raid. The army moves almost in a straight line to a previously reconnoitered and intended target. The distance to the object of attack is usually no more than 100 meters. Having approached the right place, the Amazons immediately rush to storm and break into the nest, so that, as soon as possible, taking advantage of the confusion of the inhabitants, they can find chambers with pupae, grab one for themselves and run away as soon as possible before the owners realize it.

In the first moments, the attackers succeed. Then the defenders of the nest, having come to their senses, come to grips with the enemy. By this time, most of the Amazons, loaded with booty, are already leaving the battlefield. The rest have a hard time: the defenders, two or three, rush to the Amazons, who, it must be said, never help each other, but fight only alone, killing and maiming opponents with their formidable mandibles.

After each raid on the battlefield, up to a dozen killed Amazons remain. Some desperately resisting robbers are dragged into the nest by the defenders and torn to pieces there.

Amazon ants are common in most of the territory of the former USSR. The northern limit of their habitat runs along the latitude of Moscow. Amazons inhabit Ukraine, the southern half of the European part of Russia, the Caucasus, Central Asia, Siberia and the Far East.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Snapdragon Wear 2100 Wearable Platform 12.02.2016

Qualcomm has unveiled a new Snapdragon Wear hardware platform specifically designed for use in wearable devices such as smart watches.

Today, many smartwatches running the Android Wear operating system rely on the Snapdragon 400 processor, which was originally created for smartphones. The Snapdragon Wear platform is designed to provide a number of advantages over the Snapdragon 400 in terms of functionality and efficiency.

The Snapdragon Wear 2100 is the first member of the new hardware family. It is said to be 400% smaller than the Snapdragon 30, which should expand the design possibilities for wearable gadgets. At the same time, energy consumption is reduced by 25%.

The Snapdragon Wear 2100 includes a sensor block that will allow you to implement, say, the functions of a fitness tracker. The new solution will be offered in a version that only supports Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, as well as a modification with additional support for 4G/LTE and 3G cellular networks.

It is expected that the first commercial devices based on the Snapdragon Wear 2100 will appear before the end of this year. By the way, LG has already announced its intention to use the new solution.
