What kind of seeds did Darius and Alexander send to each other before the battle, and what did it mean?

In 333 BC, before the Battle of Issus, the Persian king Darius III sent his opponent Alexander the Great as a challenge to battle a bag of sesame seeds, which symbolized the number of soldiers in his army (sesame seeds are very small, a thousand seeds weigh only 2-5 grams ).

Alexander immediately answered this with a bag of mustard seeds, implying that although his army was smaller in number, they were hotter in battle.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

Why did Aphrodite protect the Trojans in the Trojan War, while Hera and Athena helped the Achaeans?

At that time, when Paris was still grazing cattle on Mount Ida, unaware of his royal origin, Hermes, accompanied by Hera, Athena and Aphrodite, brought him a golden apple and the command of Zeus to become a judge in a dispute between three goddesses. This apple with the inscription "Most Beautiful" was thrown by the goddess of discord at the feet of Hera, Athena and Aphrodite, when they, holding hands, had a nice conversation with each other at the wedding of Peleus and Thetis (Eris, who was not invited to the wedding, decided in this way to quarrel the divine guests ).

Paris was well aware that by giving preference to one of the goddesses, he would cause enmity between the other two, but did not dare to disobey the almighty Zeus. He invited the goddesses to appear before him one at a time in order to avoid unnecessary disputes, and naked, since otherwise the divine beauties would have to be judged by their robes.

They say that Aphrodite was the first to be ready, but Athena insisted that she take off her famous magic belt, thanks to which everyone fell in love with its owner. Aphrodite agreed, but on the condition that Athena take off her helmet, without which, according to Aphrodite, she is simply terrible to look at. Therefore, Hera was the first to appear before Paris. Showing him all the virtues of her magnificent body, she declared that if he gave the apple to her, she would make him the most powerful person living today. Then Parisa tried to win Athena over to her side, promising to make him come out victorious in all his battles, and also be the most beautiful and wise man in the world.

However, Paris, without hesitation, awarded the golden apple to Aphrodite, who promised him the love of the most beautiful woman - Helen, the wife of the Spartan king Menelaus. Therefore, in the subsequent Trojan War, Aphrodite defended the Trojans, and Hera and Athena helped the Greeks.

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

The world's tallest astronomical observatory opened 04.05.2024

Exploring space and its mysteries is a task that attracts the attention of astronomers from all over the world. In the fresh air of the high mountains, far from city light pollution, the stars and planets reveal their secrets with greater clarity. A new page is opening in the history of astronomy with the opening of the world's highest astronomical observatory - the Atacama Observatory of the University of Tokyo. The Atacama Observatory, located at an altitude of 5640 meters above sea level, opens up new opportunities for astronomers in the study of space. This site has become the highest location for a ground-based telescope, providing researchers with a unique tool for studying infrared waves in the Universe. Although the high altitude location provides clearer skies and less interference from the atmosphere, building an observatory on a high mountain poses enormous difficulties and challenges. However, despite the difficulties, the new observatory opens up broad research prospects for astronomers. ... >>
