Phraseologism: And stupidly he loves, and stupidly hates.

Meaning: About a person who does not know how to build his relationships with other people (ironic).

Origin: From the poem "How to cope with the stupidity of a fool" (1827) by Evgeny Abramovich Baratynsky (1802-1844).

Random phraseology:

Drink the sea.

Meaning:

Do the impossible

Origin:

Translation from Latin: Mare interbibere. The primary source is the legends set forth by the ancient Greek historian Plutarch (c. 45 - c. 127), about the dispute between the Ethiopian king and the king of Egypt, Amasis. One day, getting excited. Amasis promised to drink the sea if the Ethiopian ruler would give him his kingdom. He took the Egyptian at his word, accepted his condition and began to demand the fulfillment of the promise. Amasis did not know what to do so as not to go back on his word. He turned to the Greek philosopher Biant for advice (see Everything I carry with me), who suggested a way out for him: after all, King Amasis promised to drink the sea, but not the rivers that flow into it every minute ... As a result, the ruler of Ethiopia received the following letter from Egypt: "We are ready to drink the sea as it is now, and we will do this on the condition that you divert the rivers that flow into it." So thanks to Biant, Amazis was able to outwit his rival. According to another legend, which is also reported by Plutarch, this advice was once given by the wise fabulist Aesop to his master Xanthus (Neanthus), who also once recklessly promised to drink the sea.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Global warming has shifted the earth's axis 29.04.2021

Research by the Institute of Geographical Sciences and Natural Resources Research has shown that the massive melting of glaciers as a result of global warming has provoked noticeable shifts in the Earth's axis of rotation. This process began around the 1990s. The problem of climate change, which has been provoked by human activity, clearly demonstrates the destructive impact of people on the planet.

The geographic north and south poles of a planet are the points where its axis of rotation intersects the surface, but they are not fixed. Changes in the distribution of the Earth's mass cause the axis, and hence the poles, to move.

In the past, only natural factors such as ocean currents, for example, have contributed to the repositioning of the poles. But new research shows that since the 1990s, the loss of hundreds of billions of tons of ice a year as a result of the climate crisis has sent the poles moving in new directions.

Scientists have found that the direction of the movement of the poles shifted from south to east in 1995, and the average speed of movement from 1995 to 2020 was 17 times higher than from 1981 to 1995. Since 1980, the position of the poles has shifted by about 4 meters.

The largest factor in the displacement of the earth's axis was precisely the melting of glaciers and the "pumping of groundwater." Groundwater is stored underground, but once pumped for drinking or agricultural use, most of it flows into the sea, redistributing its weight around the world.

The scale of this influence means that it is necessary to declare a new geological epoch - the Anthropocene, scientists say. Since the middle of the 20th century, there has been a marked acceleration in carbon dioxide emissions and sea level rise, the destruction of wildlife, and the transformation of land through farming, deforestation, and construction.
