Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Controlling consumer electronics from your smartphone 12.03.2013

Philips has released a developer toolkit for Hue, a personal wireless lighting system that has been available since October 2012. The toolkit will allow programmers to create iOS apps that can interact with Hue, and device manufacturers to produce home appliances (such as thermostats, motion sensors, and etc.) supporting the work with the system.

Even though the toolkit didn't release until March 11th, some developers released software for Hue before that date. One such program, Ambify, makes Hue lights change color in time with the music. Another application is an add-on for the game Minecraft. It synchronizes the backlight with the daily cycles of the game.

Hue includes three LED lamps and a Wi-Fi module. By installing a free program, the user can control the lamps from a smartphone or tablet. You can, for example, change the color and brightness of the glow or turn on or off the lamps while outside the apartment.

The system costs $199,95 and is available from Apple Stores. Additional lamps will cost $59 each. Philips claims the bulbs have a lifespan of 15 hours.
