Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

artificial black soil 21.10.2020

Abu Dhabi scientists work to transform desert sand into fertile soil

Due to the disruption of established import channels during the pandemic, UAE scientists have begun to look for ways to address the lack of a stable source of food, which they see in the study of the properties of black soil.

The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed weaknesses even in the stable economy of the United Arab Emirates. Therefore, the authorities are concerned that the state is almost completely dependent on food imports from other agricultural countries. Due to quarantine restrictions on imports into the country, discussions have arisen on how best to stimulate the development of agriculture in the country. In this regard, the researchers are developing an artificial fertile soil based on desert sand, but which will be similar in properties to the Ukrainian black soil.

Scientists at Khalifa University in Abu Dhabi have received the first results of the study: samples that they previously worked on showed similarities in structure, porosity and soil fertility to samples from Ukraine and Thailand.

The creation of its own agricultural base will provide the country with additional sources of food and localize agricultural production.

The researchers note that there are a number of different crops that are very difficult or impossible to grow in the UAE. These are, for example, rice and wheat. They need a lot of water and moisture to get a good harvest. The soil will allow natural resources to be controlled and used in accordance with crop growing technologies, as well as better retain moisture compared to the soils that are in the UAE.
