Why, without fear of sin, the cuckoo praises the rooster?

Krylov I.A.
Krylov I.A.

Phraseologism: Why, without fear of sin, the cuckoo praises the rooster?

Meaning: About hypocrites praising each other out of selfish motives.

Origin: From the fable "The Cuckoo and the Rooster" (1834) by I. A. Krylov (1769-1844). It depicts two writers contemporary to Krylov - the co-editors of "Northern Bee" and "Son of the Fatherland" Thaddeus Bulgarin and Nikolai Grech. Their mutual glorification served as the subject of ridicule by many writers of that time, including A. S. Pushkin (pamphlet "The Triumph of Friendship, or the Justified Alexander Anfimovich Orlov", 1831). A contemporary of the fabulist N. M. Kalmykov wrote in his memoirs (Russian archive, 1865): "These faces in the journals of the thirties praised each other to oblivion or, as they say, to insensibility. I heard this explanation from I. A. Krylov himself" .

Random phraseology:

Times change and we change with them.

Meaning:

Used in the literal sense.

Origin:

From Latin: Tetrora mutantur et nos mutamur in illis. Attributed to the Frankish emperor Lothair I (c. 795-855), as well as to the English utopian philosopher Robert Owen (1771-1858), who used this expression in his Epigrams.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. A new interesting solution from the Petgugu Global startup has been presented, which will make life easier for cat owners and help them keep their home perfectly clean and tidy. Startup Petgugu Global has unveiled a unique cat toilet that can automatically flush feces, keeping your home clean and fresh. This innovative device is equipped with various smart sensors that monitor your pet's toilet activity and activate to automatically clean after use. The device connects to the sewer system and ensures efficient waste removal without the need for intervention from the owner. Additionally, the toilet has a large flushable storage capacity, making it ideal for multi-cat households. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Chronic fatigue syndrome is chemically similar to hibernation in animals 05.09.2016

Scientists from the University of California School of Medicine in the United States studied certain metabolites in blood plasma on a group of subjects and found that chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) has a clear chemical signature. They compared this disease to the hypometabolic syndrome that occurs during starvation, diapause, or hibernation in animals.

Chronic fatigue syndrome is a rather mysterious condition, the causes of which are unclear and there is no cure. "CFS is a very complex disease. It affects many body systems. Its symptoms are varied, they are similar to the symptoms of many other diseases. It cannot be diagnosed in the laboratory. A patient can spend tens of thousands of dollars and years trying to figure out his diagnosis," said Robert K. Naviaux, professor of medicine, pediatrics and pathology and director of the Center for Mitochondrial and Metabolic Diseases at the University of California.

It is estimated that 2,5 million Americans suffer from CFS. Most often, these are women aged 30-50 years, but it occurs in men and in people of different ages. The main symptom of CFS is severe fatigue for six months and, as a result, muscle and headaches, problems with sleep and memory.

Navier and colleagues followed a group of 84 people, which consisted of 45 men and women whose symptoms matched those of CFS, and 39 people for controls. The scientists measured 612 metabolites (substances produced in metabolic processes) in 63 biochemical processes in blood plasma. It turned out that the subjects with CFS had abnormalities in 20 metabolic processes. 80% of the measured metabolites were reduced in the same way as in hypometabolic syndromes or slow metabolism. At the same time, the degree of diagnostic accuracy reached 90%.

Despite the heterogenesis of CFS, the variety of factors that lead to this condition, our results show that the response of cellular metabolism is the same in patients. Interestingly, it is chemically similar to the dauer condition seen in some living organisms as a response to environmental stress and triggers a slowdown in metabolism, allowing them to survive in conditions that would otherwise lead to cell death. In CFS, this slowdown occurs against the background of prolonged pain or disability. An example of a dower condition is the hibernation of animals.

According to the scientist, the work showed that CFS has an objectively detectable chemical signature in both men and women, and that targeted metabolomics that provide little direct molecular information can provide useful information for treatment. Only 25% of metabolic disorders found in subjects are useful for diagnosing CFS. Approximately 75% of disorders were unique to each individual and useful for targeted individual treatment.

It is noted that this work opens a new avenue for understanding the biology of CFS and, more importantly, a reliable rational way to develop new treatment for those patients who are in dire need of it. However, the authors of the work emphasize that the results require confirmation by experiments involving people from different geographical regions.
