Iron curtain

Georges Benjamin Clemenceau
Georges Benjamin Clemenceau

Phraseologism: Iron curtain.

Meaning: On a policy driven by ideological struggle and aimed at isolating a country or group of countries from external relations and influences (disapproved).

Origin: This expression was given life by a fixture previously used in the theater - an iron curtain, which, in order to protect the auditorium from fire, was lowered onto the stage in the event of a fire on it. This was very advisable in an era when open fire was forced to be used on the stage to illuminate it - candles, oil lamps, etc. For the first time, such an iron curtain began to be used in France - in the city of Lyon in the late 80s - early 90s gg. 23th century The expression "Iron Curtain" was already used during the First World War, and on December 1919, 23, J. Clemenceau declared in the French Chamber of Deputies: "We want to put an iron curtain around Bolshevism so as not to destroy civilized Europe in the future." On February 1945, 2000, an article by J. Goebbels "Year 5" appeared in the magazine "Das Reich". It said that if Germany loses the war, the USSR will fence off Eastern and South-Eastern Europe from the rest of the world with an "iron curtain". The expression iron curtain became widely known after Churchill's speech at Westminster College in Fulton (USA) on March 1946, XNUMX: "From Stettin in the Baltic to Trieste in the Adriatic, an iron curtain has descended on the continent." This speech is often considered the beginning of the Cold War.

Random phraseology:

The sleep of reason gives rise to monsters.

Meaning:

About a troubled time in the life of the country, when a disoriented society begins to believe in false doctrines and demagogue leaders (disapproved, contempt.).

Origin:

The name of one of the engravings included in the series "Caprichios" (1797-1798), by the Spanish artist Francisco José de Goya (1746-1828). He depicted in this engraving a sleeping man who is tormented by nightmares and the monsters that inhabit them.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

A new way to cool air 12.01.2023

The technique, proposed by scientists from the University of California at Berkeley, is to add charged particles and electricity to the environment. With their help, you can make the ice melt without heating, cooling the air around.

The new method was called ionocaloric cooling. Strictly speaking, something similar has been used for a long time - for example, when treating icy roads with salt.

In this case, the ions on the surface are associated with water molecules in the semi-liquid layer. With different molecular orientations, this causes water molecules to separate from the surface layer and increase its temperature-determined thickness, so most of the ice block melts when it joins the surface layer.

The California scientists' discovery was to add electricity to this cycle. The researchers simulated the ionocaloric cycle by running a current through it. The latter, passing through the system, moved the ions, shifting the melting point of the material and changing the temperature.

Thus, they were able to change the temperature by 25 °C with just one volt of charge. The results were extremely inspiring to physicists who sought to invent an efficient, environmentally friendly and inexpensive way to cool.

"Our data looks very promising on all three fronts," said mechanical engineer Ravi Prasher of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.
