Desire is the father of thought
William Shakespeare
Phraseologism: Desire is the father of thought.
Meaning: Anyone who really wants to find a solution to a problem will find it.
Origin: From the play "Henry IV" (1597-1598) by William Shakespeare (1564-1616) (part 2, act 4, fig. 4). The phrase came into Russian culture as a catch phrase from German literature and the press, so in pre-revolutionary Russia this expression was often quoted in German: Der Wunsch ist der Vater des Gedankens.
Random phraseology:
Shagreen leather.
Meaning:
About what is irreversible and constantly decreasing, disappearing (time, resources, etc.).
Origin:
From French: Le peau chagrin. The expression became popular after the publication of the novel of the same name (1830-1831) by the French writer Support de Balzac (1799-1850). The hero of the novel becomes the owner of a piece of magical shagreen leather, which, like a magic wand, fulfills any of his will - gives wealth, youth, pleasure, etc. But after each wish fulfilled, the shagreen skin irreversibly decreases in size, and the abilities of the hero of the novel decrease accordingly. Shagreen leather in the truest sense of the word is well-crafted leather from goat (not goat) skin, which is used in furriery production. |

Artificial leather for touch emulation
15.04.2024
In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men
14.04.2024
The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>
Random news from the Archive Knitting is also therapy
21.06.2012
At the University of Cardiff (UK) in 2010, a study was conducted on the topic "Knitting and memory". Experiments with 40 knitters showed that previously memorized new words are easier to remember when working with knitting needles or a crochet hook in their hands.
As experiments conducted since 2006 in the clinic for the treatment of chronic pain syndromes in the English city of Bath have shown, knitting distracts from pain and heavy thoughts, calms and evokes in the soul a sense of pride in the results of one's work, and increases self-esteem. This kind of creativity also helps with depression. However, Soviet doctors knew about this almost half a century ago.
