OLED displays will become more durable 16.05.2013

The Japanese broadcaster NHK conducts research on cutting-edge technologies, including organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display technology. NHK, working with their colleagues at Nippon Shokubai, has found an ingenious way to extend the life of OLED displays, NHK said.

According to the developers, the fragility of OLED is manifested in a drop in the brightness of the glow due to the destruction of the phosphor, especially if it is not protected from external influences. In some cases, the brightness drops by half in just 100 days of operation.

In the development of NHK and Nippon Shokubai, which received the designation iOLED (i - from inverted, "inverted"), the display structure is radically changed: the anode and cathode layers are swapped compared to how they are usually located, and an additional protective layer is added on top of the cathode. According to the developers, this structure allows you to save brightness even when the display does not have a sealed design.

The new structure is expected to find its way into mainstream products by the time OLED TVs and monitors become more affordable.
