There is no hero for the valet

Michel de Montaigne
Michel de Montaigne

Phraseologism: There is no hero for the valet.

Meaning: A servant rarely idolizes his master.

Origin: The Macedonian king Antigonus I Gonat (III century BC) said, when the poet Hermodot in one of his poems called him "god", "son of the sun": "My servant knows nothing about this" (Plutarch, "Sayings kings and generals). The words in the "Experiments" of the French philosopher Montaigne (1533-1592) go back to this expression: "The world revered another as a miracle, while his wife and servant did not see anything worthy of attention in him. There are few people who would cause admiration from their servants" (3, 2). The commentator Montaigne (Coste) adds to this: "One must be a hero in the highest degree," said Marshal Catinat (Catinat, 1637-1712), "to be one in the eyes of one's valet." This expression occurs in the 1853th century. and other authors, for example, attribute it to Ms. Cornuel (m-me Cornuel), who became famous for her wit in Parisian salons, in the form: "There is no hero for your valet" (M-elle A'l "sse, Lettres, Paris , 161, p. 1645), La Bruyère (1696-1688) in his "Characters" (XNUMX): "The closer you come to great people, the more you are convinced that they are people. They are rarely great in the eyes of their lackeys "(Biichmann, Gefliigelte Worte). The formula has become winged: "There is no hero for a valet."

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. Less forest fires 04.07.2011

In any case, in the last 150 years, forests have been burning less frequently. So say Australian geophysicists who have studied the content of carbon monoxide in air bubbles frozen in Antarctic ice more than six centuries old.

The ratio of stable isotopes of carbon and oxygen makes it possible to distinguish the gas generated during the combustion of biomass from the gas of volcanic origin or the combustion products of coal and oil. The content of "forest" carbon monoxide in the atmosphere began to grow approximately from the middle of the XIII century, when the population increased.

To clear land for crops, ancient farmers burned forests, and wood ash served as a good fertilizer. Since the end of the XNUMXth century, the frequency of forest fires has fallen sharply. Perhaps the fact is that forests have become smaller and people have begun to protect them.
