John Bull

John Arbuthnot
John Arbuthnot

Phraseologism: John Bull.

Meaning: The image of the average Englishman (or English bourgeois), as well as England itself

Origin: From the political satire of the English writer and physician John Arbuthnot (1667-1735) "Litigation without End, or the History of John Bull" (1727). John Bull is a real person: this is the court organist who wrote the music for the English anthem "God Save the King!". in Russia at the beginning of the XNUMXth century. this expression was used, as a rule, in literal translation, that is, in the form of tracing paper - Ivan Byk (Bull-bull).

Random phraseology:

King for a day.

Meaning:

About a man who happened to be endowed with power for a short time.

Origin:

From the Arabic fairy tale "Wake Dream, or Caliph for an Hour", which is part of the collection "A Thousand and One Nights". (The author of the first European translation from Arabic is the French orientalist Antoine Galland.) In this tale, the young Baghdadian Abu-Ghassan invites a stranger to visit him, not suspecting that in front of him is Caliph Haroun-al-Rashid, walking around Baghdad under the guise of a visiting merchant . Abu-Ghassan shared with the stranger his cherished dream - to become a caliph at least for one day. Harun al-Rashid, wanting to have fun, puts sleeping pills in Abu-Ghassan's wine, gives the order to transfer him to the palace and instructs his retinue to render him, when he wakes up, honors befitting a caliph. The joke succeeds. Abu Gassan believes that he is a real caliph, enjoys the luxury of palace life all day and begins to give various orders. In the evening, he again receives wine with sleeping pills, and he, sleepy, is taken home. In the tale, the awakening of Abu Ghassan is associated with many comic details. The operetta Caliph for an hour by Jacques Offenbach (1819-1880) contributed to the popularity of this expression.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Onkyo H500M and E700M High Definition Headphones 01.09.2015

Japanese company Onkyo has announced a line of headphones and audio systems with high-resolution audio (High-Resolution Audio, HRA), created in partnership with Gibson Innovations.

The Onkyo H500M on-ear headphones and Onkyo E700M in-ear headphones are the first devices to feature High Definition Audio (HRA) technologies.

The Onkyo H500M features 40mm high power drivers optimized for sound reproduction in the 7Hz-40kHz frequency range. The overlay design provides a closed acoustic architecture that limits the penetration of ambient noise. At the same time, unnecessary vibrations from low-frequency vibrations are smoothed out by a rigid aluminum housing.

Despite the fact that the model is connected to a smartphone via a cable, it is convenient to use it as a headset. For convenient switching between songs and calls, a control panel with a microphone is placed on the cable.

For comfortable wearing, the headphones are equipped with a comfortable darling and soft ear cushions. Of the technical characteristics, we note that the headphones have a sensitivity of 108 dB, the resistance is 32 ohms. It comes with a detachable 1,2 m low resistance HRA twisted cable. The model will be available in white and black.

The second novelty is the Onkyo E700M headphones, made in the form of earbuds. High-power speakers of our own design have a diameter of 13,5 mm. High-resolution audio reproduction provides support for a frequency range of 6 Hz-40 kHz.

The acoustic system is made in the form of a semi-closed architecture, which significantly limits the penetration of external noise into the auditory canal. The ergonomics of the model are thought out to the smallest detail: ultra-soft silicone ear cushions eliminate pressure on the ear, and the kit also includes replaceable Comply-type foam ear cushions. The headphone housing is made of aluminum alloy.

The sensitivity of the model is 108 dB, the resistance is 32 ohms. Headphones have all the attributes of a headset: there is a remote control with a microphone on the cord for easy switching between songs and calls. The headphones will be available in black and white.
