state machine

Thomas Hobbes
Thomas Hobbes

Phraseologism: State machine.

Meaning: A complex of state institutions and institutions.

Origin: The original source of the expression is the work "Leviathan" (1651) by the English philosopher Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679), who compares the main institutions of the state with the elements of a mechanism or machine. But the very expression - "state machine" - is not in the work of Hobbes. It appeared in oral and written speech at the end of the 1744th century, largely thanks to the German writer Johann Gottfried Herder (1803-XNUMX), who often used this expression and its derivatives in his writings - "administrative machine", "military machine ", etc. Often used ironically when they want to say that government agencies act "heartlessly."

Random phraseology:

I didn’t know what I wanted: either a constitution, or stellate sturgeon with horseradish.

Meaning:

Conflicting desires.

Origin:

The expression of M. E. Saltykov-Shchedrin, who, ridiculing the jaded and cowardly Russian intellectuals-liberals, wrote that their dreams of a constitution with extraordinary ease are replaced by dreams of stellate sturgeon with horseradish. On behalf of such a liberal, Saltykov says: “I was sitting at home and, as usual, did not know what to do with myself. I wanted something: either a constitution, or a sturgeon with horseradish, or to skin someone. flashed through my head, to peel off, and to the side ... "

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. A new interesting solution from the Petgugu Global startup has been presented, which will make life easier for cat owners and help them keep their home perfectly clean and tidy. Startup Petgugu Global has unveiled a unique cat toilet that can automatically flush feces, keeping your home clean and fresh. This innovative device is equipped with various smart sensors that monitor your pet's toilet activity and activate to automatically clean after use. The device connects to the sewer system and ensures efficient waste removal without the need for intervention from the owner. Additionally, the toilet has a large flushable storage capacity, making it ideal for multi-cat households. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Wireless data transmission 1 terabit per second 26.02.2015

Researchers at the UK-based 5G Innovation Center of Surrey seem to have set a new record. Most recently, they tested equipment that provides wireless data transmission at speeds of more than 1 terabit per second with minimal latency.

This is truly an achievement that surpasses previous results - for example, 7,5 Gb / s achieved in Samsung laboratories. But more importantly, new systems have made it possible to reduce network delays to a value in the region of one millisecond.

True, in this mode they were tested at a distance of no more than 100 meters in laboratory conditions. The result has been confirmed and recorded, and now the researchers plan to conduct a series of tests in real conditions, which is scheduled for next year. And in 2018, it is planned to hold a public demonstration of the new communication technology.

As one of the project participants noted, the most important aspect of fifth generation (5G) networks will be long-term support for new applications. It is not yet known which applications will be used in 2020, 2030, and even more so in 2040, but one thing is clear - they will be very demanding on latency.

There is a lot of work to be done in the coming years before such speeds become a reality, as it will require a completely new infrastructure and new technologies that can fit in smartphones, but at the same time support such a fast data transfer. In the meantime, many LTE-enabled smartphones do not support all the capabilities of even fourth-generation networks (4G), and the LTE-Advanced standard allows you to download data at a speed of about 1 Gb / s for stationary receivers and around 300 Mb / s for mobile users.
