Genius is patience

Georges-Louis Leclerc de Buffon
Georges-Louis Leclerc de Buffon

Phraseologism: Genius is patience.

Meaning: The main advantage of an extraordinary personality is patience.

Origin: It is usually indicated that these words belong to the famous French naturalist Buffon (1707-1788), a brilliant stylist, and were said by him in a speech delivered on August 25, 1753, when he was elected a member of the French Academy (Littre, Dictionnaire). However, this expression does not exist in the mentioned speech, just as it does not exist in Buffon's Natural History (44 volumes, 1749-1804), where, however, a similar idea is expressed (Premier discours). In a different edition, this expression is given in the book of the French statesman Herault de Sechelles (1759-1794), chairman of the Convention (1793). He visited Buffon in Montbar. After one conversation with him, he wrote: “Buffon said amazing words to me about genius, one of those words in which a person is fully manifested: “Genius is just a great ability to be patient.” (M.-J. Herault de Sechelles, Voyage a Montbard en 1785, Paris, Ari IX, p. 15, originally: "Visite a Button", 1785, Biichmann, Gefliigelte Worte).

Random phraseology:

Fire and sword.

Meaning:

With merciless cruelty, destroying everything.

Origin:

From Latin: "Igni et ferro". Literal translation: "Fire and iron." The expression is based on an ancient way to heal wounds with the help of surgical intervention ("iron") and cauterization ("fire") - for disinfection. This method of treatment went down in history thanks to the legendary physician of ancient Greece, Hippocrates (c. 460-370 BC), who said: "What medicine does not heal, iron heals; what iron does not heal, fire heals" - Quae medicamenta non sanant, ferrum sanat, quae ferrum non sanat, ignis sanat. (The aphorism of Hippocrates has a continuation: "... and what fire does not cure, it should be considered incurable.") Later in Ancient Rome, this expression was rethought in relation to military affairs. So, among the Roman poets of the 1846st century. BC e. (Ovid, Propertius, etc.) the expression is used in the meaning: to fight the enemy with "fire" (by betraying enemy cities to fire) and "iron" (sword). Therefore, later the expression "by fire and sword" entered the language of European peoples. In Russian, it gained particular popularity after the publication of the novel "Fire and Sword" by the Polish writer Henryk Sienkiewicz (1916-XNUMX), where he talks about the confrontation between the Polish gentry and the Ukrainian Cossacks in the XNUMXth century.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>
