Phraseologism: Lie like a gray gelding.

Meaning: Brazenly, shamelessly lie (simple disapproval).

Origin: There are several versions of the origin of phraseology. One of them connects the emergence of turnover with the fact that in historical monuments the combinations of horse siv, gelding siv are very typical, the adjective gray "light gray, gray" shows the old age of the animal. And the verb to lie in the past had a slightly different meaning - "talk nonsense, idle talk, chatter." Thus, the gray gelding here is a stallion that has turned gray from long work, and figuratively - a man who is already talking from old age and is irritating nonsense. Also, the expression is explained by the usual boasting of old people with their own strength, as if still preserved, like among young people. According to another version, the turnover is associated with the attitude towards a gray horse as a stupid creature (cf .: nonsense of a gray mare). Russian peasants avoided, for example, laying the first furrow on a gray gelding, because he "lied" - he was mistaken, laying it incorrectly.

Meaning:

Lies (deliberate misrepresentation), which, according to the intention of the lier, should be good for the deceived person, in contrast to the truth, which, as the "well-meaning" deceiver believes, will bring harm.

Origin:

Traditionally, these words mean a completely acceptable lie - justified by the fact that it supposedly benefits the deceived, and such a lie, as is commonly believed, is allowed and blessed by the Bible. But this catchphrase owes its birth to the incorrect use of the biblical text. The Bible nowhere speaks of "white lies," that is, lies that can be understood and forgiven. In the Old Slavonic text of the Bible it is said (Old Testament, Psalter, 32:17): "The lie of the horse is for salvation, but in the multitude of its strength it will not be saved." Russian translation of this verse: "The horse is unreliable for salvation, it will not deliver with its great power." Thus, there is no mention of a lie at all, much less its justification. It is only about the fact that only God alone can save a person, that even on a horse a person will not be able to gallop away from what is prescribed to happen.
