Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

FedEx Postman Robot 21.02.2019

Express delivery service FedEx introduced the robot mailman FedEx SameDay Bot. The self-driving device is designed to help retailers deliver same-day orders. It will serve the so-called "last mile", that is, delivery directly to the recipient.

To help retailers assess delivery needs with self-driving robots, FedEx is partnering with companies such as AutoZone, Lowe's, Pizza Hut, Target, Walgreens and Walmart.

It is estimated that more than 60% of shoppers live within a few kilometers of a store. On-demand robot delivery can be very suitable for them.

FedEx is developing the robot in partnership with DEKA Development & Research, founded by Dean Kamen, the inventor of pioneering products such as the iBot and the Segway.

The electric robot is designed for movement on sidewalks and roadsides. It is equipped with lidar and several cameras. Their presence, in combination with machine learning algorithms, allows the robot to detect obstacles and avoid collisions with them, pave a safe path, respecting the rules of the road. The patency of the robot is sufficient for movement on unpaved surfaces, curbs and even steps.

FedEx plans to test the bot this summer. The initial test will include delivery between selected FedEx Offices that offer SameDay City service in 1900 cities in 32 markets using FedEx branded vehicles.
