Griboyedov A.S.

Phraseologism: Look and something.

Meaning: Vague reasoning about something without a thorough acquaintance with the subject of reasoning.

Origin: Quote from A. S. Griboyedov's comedy "Woe from Wit" (1824), d. 4, yavl. 4, Repetilov's words: "However, you can find in magazines // His passage - Look and Something. // What is Something about? - about everything."

Trumpet of Jericho.

Meaning:

Deafening, unusually loud voice (disapproved). Hence the expression "trumpet voice (voice)".

Origin:

From the Bible. The Old Testament (Book of Joshua, 6) tells of the siege of the Jews returning from Egyptian captivity to Palestine, the city of Jericho, which stood in their way. They besieged it for six days, and it is not known how long the standing under the walls of this fortress would have lasted, if not for a miracle. On the seventh day, the priests of the Jews began to walk around the walls of the city, blowing trumpets. And from their sound the walls suddenly collapsed.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Mosquitoes will stop attacking people 13.06.2013

For the first time, scientists have managed to create genetically modified mosquitoes that react differently than their "natural" relatives to human odors and to the repellent diethyltoluamide (DEET). Scientists from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute announced their discovery.

Researchers have not only genetically altered mosquitoes, but also learned why these insects are drawn to people. But most importantly, scientists plan to "wean" mosquitoes to choose people as a priority victim and thereby minimize human infection with diseases such as yellow fever and dengue fever.

The orco gene, which was deleted from flies 10 years ago, helped to deal with the olfactory addictions of mosquitoes, and the flies lost their olfactory abilities. In the case of yellow fever mosquitoes (Aedes aegypti), scientists acted rather at random, and were pleasantly surprised when they learned that after the removal of this gene, mosquitoes also stopped reaching out to humans, preferring the laboratory guinea pig.

Next, the team tested how mosquitoes with orco mutations reacted to the repellant. To do this, a repellent (diethyltoluamide) was applied to one hand of a person, and the other was left untreated. Mosquitoes with a modified gene landed on both hands equally often, without smelling the repellent. However, when they were already landing on the arm, they quickly flew away from the part of the body that was covered with the repellent. This proves that mosquitoes have two different mechanisms for odor perception. One gene is responsible for the perception of smells that are in the air, and the other comes into action as soon as the insect touches the skin, and makes a decision whether to bite or not.

The new insights from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute will help scientists understand how insects react to current insect repellents, as well as what the next generation of repellents should be like. And it cannot be ruled out that soon it will be enough to apply a special repellent to the skin and boldly go to the habitats of the yellow fever mosquito without fear of contracting yellow fever or dengue fever. In addition, the evening on the shore of a summer lake will become much more pleasant.
