Vanity Fair

John Bunyan
John Bunyan

Phraseologism: Vanity Fair.

Meaning: About a society where the pursuit of success, concern for prestige, career, etc. are in honor. (disapproving, scornful).

Origin: Translation from English: "Vanity fair". It is first found in the book "The Pilgrim's Progress" by the English writer John Bunyan (1628-1688). In the book, the protagonist passes through a certain city, about which the pilgrim says: "The name of this city is Vanity, and in this city there is a fair called the Vanity Fair." But the expression became popular thanks to the English satirist novelist William Makepeace Thackeray (1811-1863). He called his famous satirical novel ("Vanity fair", 1847), depicting the mores of contemporary England. At first, in the Russian translation (editions of 1853, 1873, 1885), this novel was called "The Bazaar of Worldly Vanity". And this expression was popular in Russia for a long time, largely thanks to M.E. Saltykov-Shchedrin, who often used it in his works (for example, the essays of 1874-1877 "In the Environment of Moderation and Accuracy", etc.). It was later replaced by the modern, now classic, version of the title of William Thackeray's novel, Vanity Fair.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. Furniture is being tested 17.10.2000

In Nuremberg (Germany), there is a special institute that tests the safety of all consumer goods that go on sale.

There are no data for Germany, but, for example, in the USA in 1997, 411 cases of home injuries related to beds and mattresses were recorded, 373 - to chairs, armchairs and sofas, and 222 - to desks, cabinets and shelves.

To prevent such troubles, in Nuremberg furniture is tested for durability. The chair, equipped with sensors, is fixed on a test bench and subjected to alternate pressure on the back and seat up to 300 times. The pressure force of the pneumatic piston on the seat is up to 140 kilograms, on the back - at least 35 kilograms. In real life, such a chair will have to experience several million such loads during its service life, and you must be sure that it will not let the owner down.

Before the advent of a special test bench, such chairs were tested at the city police department. They were put in the room on duty, where work goes on around the clock, people either sit down or get up.

In another laboratory, the resistance of furniture varnish is tested. One drop of twenty-seven household liquids is applied to the table cover: vinegar, ammonia, lemonade, insecticides, solutions of detergents and stain removers, wine, vodka, vegetable oil and much more. Two hours later, chemists evaluate the results.
