Weimar Republic

German
German

Phraseologism: Weimar Republic.

Meaning: About a country that is experiencing the collapse of traditional values, a crisis in all areas of life, which objectively should end with a period of "restoring order", the rule of a "firm hand" (a dictatorship of the fascist type) or simply some kind of "tightening the screws" ..

Origin: The republic (1918-1919) established in Germany as a result of the November Revolution of 1933, which received its name from the so-called Weimar Constitution. The latter was developed and adopted in the city of Weimar by the German Constituent National Assembly that met there. The constitution, which came into force on August 11, 1919, guaranteed basic civil rights and freedoms, but did not affect the socio-economic foundations of the old, imperial Germany: both the financial and industrial oligarchy and the German officer corps, longing for revenge for defeat in the First World War, and the police, and bureaucracy. The Weimar Republic experienced a systemic crisis - economic, social, ideological, spiritual, which was weighed down by a feeling of deep national humiliation, since the country was forced to pay reparations to the winners in the war of 1914-1918, it was forbidden to create an army and navy. In broad sections of the population, there was a growing sense of the need for change, to restore order with a "strong hand" that would rid Germany of enemies, restore its former power and restore the Germans a sense of self-respect. On the basis of this expression, by analogy, another was born - "Weimar Russia", which was sometimes applied in the political press to Russia in the early 90s. XNUMXth century

Random phraseology:

Here you are, (grandmother), and St. George's Day.

Meaning:

About unexpectedly unfulfilled hopes, sudden changes for the worse, a sharp restriction of freedom of action (ironic, joking).

Origin:

Previously, the expression came from the time of medieval Russia, when the peasants had the right, having settled with the previous landowner, to move on to a new one. According to the law issued by Ivan the Terrible, such a transition could take place only after the completion of agricultural work, and specifically a week before St. George's Day (November 25, according to the old style, when the Great Martyr George, the patron saint of farmers, was celebrated) or a week later. After the death of Ivan the Terrible, such a transition was prohibited and the peasants were fixed to the land. Then the expression "Here's to you, grandmother, and St. George's Day" was born as an expression of chagrin due to changed circumstances. St. George was popularly called Yegoriy, therefore at the same time the word "cheat" arose, that is, to deceive, to cheat.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. Deprive Pirates MP3 16.03.2004

MP3 patent holders Thomson and Fraunhofer have begun developing a new technology that will make it impossible to piracy MP3 files.

According to the developers, the currently existing coding standards (DRM) are incompatible, which in practice leads to a rigid binding of content to hardware and software, and prevents not only the full use of multimedia files, but also control over their sale.

In this regard, a new DRM dongle will be created that supports the open architecture that the Open Mobile Alliance has been involved in developing. The key will be issued free of charge to each company that acquires the rights to use the MP3 codec.

Commenting on the obvious question about the existence of alternative codecs, specialists from the companies developing the new system said that their licensing was out of the question until a reliable protection mechanism was created.
