Meaning: The formula for an apology (explanation) of someone's strange behavior, as a commentary on it (jokingly ironic).

Origin: From "The Story of Unrequited Love" (1923) by Maxim Gorky (pseudonym of Alexei Maksimovich Peshkov, 1868-1936). The author writes about a strange owner of a stationery shop, who conducts his business with obvious indifference, "as if doing someone else's business, which is not interesting to him", but keeps in his shop a collection of postcards with a portrait of a little-known actress, some of which he himself published, with speaks passionately about her successes on stage, about her talent. The author concludes: "Undoubtedly, it was some kind of eccentric. Eccentrics adorn the world. I decided to get to know him better, I succeeded ..." And the owner of the shop told his new acquaintance about how he loved this actress, and she loved him - no, preferring to him the theater and the delights of his fans.
