Phraseologism: Black Hundred.

Meaning: 1. Representatives of the extreme right forces, monarchists, chauvinists, anti-Semitists. 2. Spontaneously created armed groups of criminal or semi-criminal elements.

Origin: The historical name of the Russian militia units during the struggle against the Polish-Lithuanian intervention in the 1905th century. These detachments were formed from among the townspeople, that is, simple, "black" (in the language of that time) people. In 1906, this name entered the political vocabulary with a negative connotation - this is how the left-wing press of Russia began to call armed combat squads, which were created under the tutelage of the government itself from representatives of small merchants, shopkeepers, merchants, artisans, etc. In the future, the expression "black hundred" became a household name for pro-monarchist-minded individuals and organizations ("Union of the Russian People", "Union of Michael the Archangel", etc.) of a pogrom sense, who saw the root cause of Russian troubles in the existence in the country of intelligentsia, students, "foreigners" in general and Jews in particular. The Black Hundreds themselves willingly accepted the name "Black Hundred", seeing in it a memory of a glorious historical past, a conscious opposition to the "Red" elements and a successive connection with the "Black", that is, the common people.
