The worse the better

Dostoevsky F.M.
Dostoevsky F.M.

Phraseologism: The worse, the better.

Meaning: Expecting worsening of events or facilitating this with the aim of deriving probable personal benefit or obtaining moral satisfaction.

Origin: The expression became popular in its well-known, politicized sense thanks to F.M. Dostoevsky (1821-1881), who used this expression in the novel (part 3, ch. 9) "The Humiliated and Insulted" (1861). He would later repeat it in his Diary of a Writer (January, 1881). The same turnover is also found in a letter from A.S. Pushkin to P.A. Vyazemsky (dated June 24-25, 1824): “I wanted to talk with you about changing the ministry. What do you think about this? I am both glad and not "For a long time, the motto of every Russian has been the worse, the better. The Russian opposition, which, thanks to the Russian God, was made up of our writers, whatever it was, was already getting into some kind of impatience, which I secretly teased, expecting something."

Random phraseology:

Birthright.

Meaning:

Currently, the expression is used in the meaning of the pre-emptive right of the person who did, created something first.

Origin:

From the Bible. As it is said in the Old Testament (Genesis, 25:31-34), hungry Esau, the eldest of the twin sons of the patriarch Isaac, sold his birthright to his younger brother Jacob for lentil soup, that is, special rights (in particular, the right to inherit parental property) , which, according to ancient custom, was received by the first-born boy in the family. Hence the two derivative expressions - "sell the birthright" (sell, for example, your copyright, the right to pre-emptive ownership of something) and "sell for lentil stew" (give up something important for an insignificant benefit, actually give it away, squander , let it go to the wind).

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue.
