Take out the saints

Proverbs and sayings
Proverbs and sayings

Phraseologism: Take out the saints.

Meaning: There is no strength to endure anything, unbearable, unbearable for others.

Origin: Saints are icons in ancient Russian everyday life. The essence of the saying "at least endure the saints" is the conviction that reverence for the icon should protect it from contemplating everything obscene, sinful, or from being present at indecent events. To take out the saints, or at least to pull the icon in the corner with a special curtain, as was customary among the Old Believers, such measures were taken so that the saints would not see the outrages committed by people: drunkenness, fights, domestic squabbles.

Random phraseology:

Top ten thousand.

Meaning:

financial aristocracy.

Origin:

The expression belongs to the American journalist Nathaniel Parker Willis (1806-1867). In No. 31 of the New York Evening Mirror, November 11, 1844, in the article "Necessity for a promenade drive," he wrote: "At present there is no distinction between the top ten thousand in the city." In the 40s. 1888th century the upper stratum of American society did indeed amount to about ten thousand people. This expression, which became winged, in England received the laconic form "the upper ten". In America, it was superseded by the later arose "four hundred", after Charles H. Crandall published in 1895 in "New York Daily Tribune" sensational interview with the "legislator" of New York secular society, lawyer Mac Alistair (d. XNUMX), nicknamed "the drawing room autocrat", he claimed that there were only about four hundred people in New York society Worte).

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Resurrection of mammoths 21.02.2017

A group of Harvard scientists announced that they are already close to the resurrection of mammoths. Researchers believe that in less than two years they will be able to create a fully functional embryo, although it will take much more time to create an adult mammoth.

Resurrecting an extinct animal is not easy. The mammoth is an ideal candidate to be the first species to be resurrected, as many intact mammoth specimens survive, and the creatures' closest relatives, elephants, are walking the Earth right now. However, the discussion on how specifically to revive the mammoths is now in full swing.

First, there is not enough suitable genetic material for cloning. Of course, many mammoth tissues have been found, but most of their DNA has been destroyed due to being in permafrost. South Korea hopes to find enough DNA for cloning, but the Harvard group wants to take a different approach.

It genetically modifies the elephant genome, replacing some of the elephant genes with mammoth genes. In essence, they are trying to manually construct the mammoth genome. The result is an animal that doesn't look exactly like the extinct version, but looks more or less identical.

Harvard scientists want to implant the created genome inside the embryo of elephants, which, according to them, can be done within the next two years. Once that's done, they'll place the embryo in an artificial womb. True, the technology is not enough yet, so it will be a few more years before we see a real woolly mammoth, or even an entire park of mammoths.
