A good shepherd shears his sheep, but does not skin them

Tiberius
Tiberius

Phraseologism: A good shepherd shears his sheep, but does not skin them.

Meaning: There is a line in tax policy that cannot be crossed.

Origin: From Latin: "Boni pastores est tondere pecus, non deglubere". This is how the Roman emperor Tiberius (beginning of the XNUMXst century) answered the governors of Rome in his imperial provinces, when they asked him for permission to once again raise taxes.

Random phraseology:

For those passing by.

Meaning:

It is jokingly-ironically quoted in response to someone's immoderate enthusiasm, when they judge something superficially, without knowledge of the subject, looking at everything from the point of view of a passenger, tourist, consumer, etc.

Origin:

From the fable "Passer-by" (1803) by Ivan Ivanovich Dmitriev (1760-1837). It tells about a passer-by who entered the monastery and began to admire the beautiful view that opened up to him from the bell tower. "What," he cried, "magical places! // Suddenly I see mountains, lakes and valleys! // Magnificent pictures! // Isn't it?" - he asked a question to one // From the brethren standing with him. // "Yes! - the worker answered him with a sigh. - // For those who pass by". This fable is a loose retelling of the historical anecdote about the French king Henry IV, who, having once entered the monastery of Sieto, began to admire: "Oh, how good it is here! My God, what a beautiful corner!" At the same time, one fat monk answered all the royal praises with only one word Transientibus - For those passing by (lat.). Henry IV drew attention to this and asked him what he actually wanted to say. "I want to say, sir, that this is great for those passing by, and not for those who live here permanently." In Russia, this expression became widely used thanks to I. I. Dmitriev, whose works were very popular in their time.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

How a laser cuts flesh 21.12.2007

Scientists from the USA have found out that the laser cuts living tissue in different ways. A laser scalpel in the hands of a surgeon is no longer exotic. However, physicists still do not fully understand how it works.

Scientists from Vanderbilt University (USA), headed by Associate Professor Shane Hutson, tried to bring clarity. Having accepted that since the human body mostly consists of water, they conducted experiments on this substance, and then proceeded to look for differences in the interaction of a laser beam with biological tissues.

As it turned out, the infrared laser actually burns the substance, destroying its constituent molecules. At the same time, it fuses tissues, clogging blood vessels, so this laser is used during operations associated with large bleeding.

Pulsed lasers in the visible and ultraviolet ranges work quite differently: they excite not molecules, but individual electrons. Those generate real charge avalanches, forming plasma microclouds. Exploding, these clouds move apart the tissue molecules, damaging them to a lesser extent. It is no coincidence that such lasers are used during delicate operations on the eye or brain.

A special molecule, NADH, is responsible for the transfer of electrons in the cell. It easily absorbs photons in the near ultraviolet, and the electrons released as a result initiate the formation of a plasma cloud. But living tissues differ in their NADH content. For example, the cornea of the eye does not have this substance, so it behaves like a water gel under a laser scalpel.
