Ancient Greek and Roman mythology
Phraseologism: Fortune.
Meaning: Fate, happiness (joking).
Origin: From Roman mythology. Fortune is the goddess of blind chance, good luck, happiness and misfortune (if the goddess turns her back on a person). She was usually depicted as a blindfolded woman standing on a ball or wheel. In one hand she holds a rudder from a river vessel (a sign that she controls the fate of a person), in the other - a cornucopia (meaning the well-being that she can give). And the ball or wheel on which the goddess stands, as well as the bandage over her eyes, means the inconstancy of the goddess Fortune, the changeability of her goodwill. It was traditionally depicted on almost all ancient Roman coins. Hence the expression "wheel of Fortune" - chance, blind, changeable happiness.
