Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Metal bubbles for protective packaging 14.07.2013

Researchers at North Carolina State University have developed an unusual metallic bubble wrap that can be used as protective packaging for everything from food to cars and spacecraft.

The new material is similar to the familiar "anti-stress" polyethylene film with air bubbles that can be popped with your fingers. The only difference is that the new packaging material is made of metal, which makes it not only flexible, but also durable and heat resistant. The potential scope of the new material is very wide, for example, it can cover the wings of aircraft, sheathe body panels of cars, make suitcases, bags for computers, etc. Thus, it is possible that in the coming years we will see cars with a pimply body. We will not argue about the aesthetics of such a decision, but this will reduce the cost of a car, and besides, it will be more difficult to make a dent on such a body.

The new material performs the function of conventional sheet metal, but is lighter and more flexible. The price is also low, since the production of bubble metal requires only a few steps. First, a thin sheet of aluminum or any other metal is taken and rolled with a spiked roller. The result is a sheet with many hemispherical depressions into which a foaming composition, such as calcium carbonate or titanium hydrate, is placed. Then another sheet of metal is placed on top, and a heavy roller squeezes both sheets - combines them into one. The resulting flat sheet is placed in an oven, where heat initiates the foaming process: foam under pressure forms many bubbles on the surface of the metal sheet - the bubble sheet of metal is ready.

The researchers subjected the new film to various tests and compared it to conventional sheet metal. It turned out that bubble wrap weighs 20-30% less and has 30-50% more bending strength. At the same time, the tensile strength was similar to ordinary sheet metal.

The new metallic bubble wrap will primarily be used where strong insulation and protection are needed but space is limited - just a few millimeters thick. An example is the insulation of the engine compartment of a car, the thermal insulation of cryogenic tanks, the packaging of products, especially canned ones, etc. Compared to plastic, metal film is more environmentally friendly, heat resistant and easy to recycle.
