Silent American

Graham Greene
Graham Greene

Phraseologism: Quiet American.

Meaning: About an outwardly ordinary person who pretends to be a tourist, businessman, etc., but works for the secret services of his country (ironic).

Origin: The title of a novel (1955) by English writer Graham Greene (1904-1991) about a CIA agent on a special assignment in Vietnam.

Random phraseology:

Fire and sword.

Meaning:

With merciless cruelty, destroying everything.

Origin:

From Latin: "Igni et ferro". Literal translation: "Fire and iron." The expression is based on an ancient way to heal wounds with the help of surgical intervention ("iron") and cauterization ("fire") - for disinfection. This method of treatment went down in history thanks to the legendary physician of ancient Greece, Hippocrates (c. 460-370 BC), who said: "What medicine does not heal, iron heals; what iron does not heal, fire heals" - Quae medicamenta non sanant, ferrum sanat, quae ferrum non sanat, ignis sanat. (The aphorism of Hippocrates has a continuation: "... and what fire does not cure, it should be considered incurable.") Later in Ancient Rome, this expression was rethought in relation to military affairs. So, among the Roman poets of the 1846st century. BC e. (Ovid, Propertius, etc.) the expression is used in the meaning: to fight the enemy with "fire" (by betraying enemy cities to fire) and "iron" (sword). Therefore, later the expression "by fire and sword" entered the language of European peoples. In Russian, it gained particular popularity after the publication of the novel "Fire and Sword" by the Polish writer Henryk Sienkiewicz (1916-XNUMX), where he talks about the confrontation between the Polish gentry and the Ukrainian Cossacks in the XNUMXth century.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. Helicopter to search for submarines 21.02.2021

The American company Northrop Grumman tested the carrier-based unmanned helicopter MQ-8C FireScout by searching for submarines.

The checks were carried out as part of a project to expand the list of tasks for which MQ-8C drones can be used. The MQ-8C was tested by Northrop Grumman in conjunction with the British company Ultra, which manufactures sonar buoys and containers for their launch. The Bell 407 manned multi-purpose helicopter was used for testing. The MQ-8C deck drone was made on the basis of this particular helicopter.

During the tests, one container for launching sonar buoys was installed on the helicopter, containing 24 such devices. At the same time, the retrofitting project for the MQ-8C provides for the possibility of installing two containers of 24 sonar buoys in each. Other details about the tests were not disclosed, but it is known that the developers recognized the tests as successful.

Currently, manned aircraft and anti-submarine helicopters are used to search for submarines. Such aircraft drop sonar buoys into the water, which find underwater objects and transmit position information. The search is also carried out using magnetic anomaly detectors on aircraft that are sensitive to magnetic field distortions in the presence of massive metal objects.
