Meaning: About the love torments and experiences of a hopelessly in love young man (jokingly-iron.).

Origin: Title of the novel (1774, first Russian translation-1781) by Johann Wolfgang Goethe (1749-1832). Young Werther fell passionately in love with his friend's fiancee Charlotte, who, having married, rejects his love, being true to her duty. Werther commits suicide.
