Straw widow

German
German

Phraseologism: Straw widow.

Meaning: A wife temporarily left without a husband or not living with him (joking).

Origin: Phraseologism is formed by tracing the German compound word "Strohwitwe", associated with a medieval custom: a girl who gave birth to an illegitimate child was publicly exposed to shame with a straw wreath on her head as a punishment. She was called "Strohbraut" - straw bride. A bunch of straw served among the Germans, Russians and some other peoples as a symbol of a concluded agreement - marriage, purchases, deals, etc.

From the poetic fairy tale "The Little Humpbacked Horse" (1834) by the writer Pyotr Pavlovich Ershov (1815-1869).

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Abnormally high temperature recorded at the North Pole 25.12.2016

Scientists at the Oxford Institute for Environmental Change have recorded record heat waves in the Arctic over the past few months. Studies have shown that in the region of the North Pole in November and December the temperature was 5 degrees higher than the average.

Warming is caused by streams of warm air regularly coming from the North Atlantic, in recent times meteorologists have observed them especially often. As a result, by the New Year the temperature can rise to zero, which is as much as 20 degrees above the temperature norm.

Last year, a similar situation was observed at the North Pole - then the temperature rose to +1,5 degrees Celsius. According to scientists, the record heat for the Arctic is directly related to climate change resulting from human activities. If earlier such weather anomalies were extremely rare - once in a thousand years, now they happen about once every 50 years.

Also, according to climatologists, the accelerated process of melting glaciers leads to an increase in air temperature: in recent months, the thickness of the ice cover of the Arctic Ocean has noticeably decreased, especially in the summer of 2016.
