Supersteel modeled after human bone

14.03.2017

An international team of scientists from the University of Kyushu (Japan), the Max Planck Institute (Germany) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have developed supersteel. They took a human bone as a sample - it is light, strong and resistant to cracking due to its hierarchically organized structure. As a result, the new material does not experience a phenomenon known as metal fatigue for longer. The developers presented their results in an article in the journal Science.

Human bones have a complex structure - at the nanoscale, tiny collagen fibers are organized roughly like a laminate, i.e. with different layers of fibers oriented in different directions. At the micro level, the bone has a lattice structure and specially arranged voids, due to which the bone becomes light and strong at the same time.

The new supersteel has a similar structure at the nanoscale. In addition to the layers, which help to limit the propagation of already existing cracks to the layer in which they originated, various alloys with different strengths are used in the material. Thanks to this device, the resulting cracks spread each in their own way, which helps prevent its growth. In addition, because some areas are more flexible than others, the energy of repeated loads is absorbed and can sometimes close the resulting microcrack.

Because of all this, the new steel is much more resistant to metal fatigue, which will allow it to be used to create many structures - for example, bridges and spacecraft - less prone to unexpected destruction.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

1600W chargers with 19" rack version 31.12.2016

Mean Well has developed two series of power supplies (RPB-1600 and RCB-1600) adapted for high capacity battery charging of lead-acid and lithium-ion (Li-Ion) electrochemical systems.

In terms of basic parameters and capabilities, both series are similar, and the differences lie in the method of installation / installation and in the maximum number of blocks connected in parallel. All units of both series have the same 1U (41 mm) chassis height.

The RPB-1600 series is manufactured in a "regular" version with the ability to connect up to 3 pcs in parallel (up to 4800 W), and the RCB-1600 series is installed in a 19" Rack with the possibility of connecting up to 5 pcs in parallel in one module (up to 8000 W). The RCB-1600 series contains built-in OR-ing transistors, which allow hot-plugging of individual blocks in the system.

Power supplies have a built-in I2C control interface (PMBus protocol) and allow you to set the required voltage and current values over a wide range. The devices provide a 3-stage battery charging mode with constant current/voltage with values changing according to a certain algorithm.

To install the RCB-1600 series in a rack, there are special baskets/chassis RHP-1UI-A and RHP-1UT-A with the necessary connectors and differing in the method of connecting the 230 V network (via IEC320-C14 connectors or via a screw connection).

Power supplies are designed for use in various emergency power systems (telecommunications, data centers), for charging batteries in electric vehicles, for electrolysis systems and other applications where a stable controlled current of increased value is required.
