Servant of the people

Isocrates
Isocrates

Phraseologism: Servant of the people.

Meaning: MP and other civil servant.

Origin: The expression goes back to antiquity. The ancient Greek orator and publicist Isocrates (436-338 BC) in his work "Areopagetic" (c. 354 BC) wrote: "The people should appoint representatives of power, [...] and people who have sufficient leisure, should devote themselves to public affairs as servants of the people" (translated by K. M. Kolobova). This expression became popular thanks to I.V. Stalin (1878-1953), who at the pre-election meeting at the Bolshoi Theater (December 11, 1937) said: "A deputy must know that he is a servant of the people." Later, this expression was repeatedly used on Soviet-era election posters.

Random phraseology:

Dust of distant countries.

Meaning:

About a souvenir brought from a trip (jokingly-iron.).

Origin:

From the poem "Do you remember? In our sleepy bay..." (1911) by Alexander Alexandrovich Blok (1880-1921): colored fog.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>
