Phraseologism: Blue stocking.

Meaning: About a pedantic woman, devoid of charm and femininity, absorbed only by scientific interests (outdated. disapproved).

Origin: From English: Bluestocking. The expression was born in England in the 80s. 1689th century in the salon of the writer Mary Wortley Montagu (1762-1702). The soul of this salon was the scientist Benjamin Stellingfleet (1771-1711), who, not particularly watching his suit, wore blue stockings with a black dress. This greatly amused the salon ladies, who nicknamed the absent-minded scientist "bluestocking" - bluestocking. And when for some reason he did not come at the appointed hour, everyone was worried and repeated: "Today the conversation will go badly - there are no" blue stockings "!" Soon this nickname began to apply to all participants in this circle, where conversations were held on scientific and literary topics. There is a version that the name "blue stockings" was given to Lady Montagu's mug by the Dutch admiral Boskaven (1761-1820) during his stay in England. The expression became a household name in England after the poet George Gordon Byron wrote a satire (XNUMX) on the salon of Lady Montagu and called it "The Blues". Soon the expression passed to France, where "blue stockings" (bas bleus) began to be called a very specific type of women - carried away by scientific work, literature to the detriment of home and family. From France, the expression came to Russia, and already P. A. Vyazemsky, a contemporary and friend of A. S. Pushkin, spoke reproachfully "about our blue and red stockings."
