Origin: An expression from A. V. Sukhovo-Kobylin's comedy "Krechinsky's Wedding", first staged on stage in 1855, printed in 1869. Krechinsky's valet asks the petty cheater Rasplyuev, who returned after a card game: "Well, Ivan Antonych, there was a game , whether?" Rasplyuev looks at him for a long time and finally answers: "There was a game, well, I can say, it was a game!" Further, he tells how he was beaten for fraud (d. 2, yavl. I).

The world's fastest hard drive from Seagate 22.03.2018

Seagate, an American manufacturer of storage solutions, has demonstrated a new ultra-fast hard drive. The design of the device uses Seagate's own "multi-actuator" technology under the Mach.2 brand. It was this solution that made it possible to achieve a twofold increase in throughput compared to drives of the same class. In addition, the company's new drives will record data using a new technology developed by Seagate.

A method that allows to achieve an increase in the level of recording reliability and significantly increase the storage capacity (up to 40 TB) without increasing the number of magnetic platters is called HAMR (thermal assisted magnetic recording).

According to Seagate, the new device meets all modern standards of reliability and durability. The MTBF of HAMR heads is 6 hours, equivalent to 3,2 PB of recorded data and 20 times the industry standard.

The new hard drive will be part of Exos' flagship line for the corporate sector. The price and timing of the appearance of new items on sale are still unknown.

A hard disk drive consists of several platters covered with magnetic material and located on a single axis, as well as a set of heads, the number of which corresponds to the number of platters. The head drive is called an actuator and is generally capable of moving the heads simultaneously, which imposes certain restrictions on the possibility of synchronously performing read / write operations on several platters at the same time.

Seagate solved this problem by dividing the single actuator into two independent head assemblies. This achieved a record sequential write speed of 480 MB/s without increasing the speed of the hard drive spindle, which is more than twice the throughput (235 MB/s) of standard industrial solutions running at 7,2 thousand revolutions per minute.
