Holy of holies

Bible
Bible

Phraseologism: Holy of Holies.

Meaning: 1. The most precious, intimate, 2. the most intimate, holy place in the central places of worship of various religions, access to which is usually strictly taboo and with which the physical presence of divine forces is traditionally associated.

Origin: The most intimate place of the Tabernacle of the Assembly, and then the Jerusalem Temple, where the Tablets of the Covenant were kept. This name denoted the inner part of the Tabernacle of the Assembly, separated from the outer premises by a veil (parochet), in which the Ark of the Covenant was located. The sanctity of the place was also determined by the fact that it was there, above the ark, that the Lord appeared to the high priest to proclaim his will and testaments to the Jewish people. In the Jerusalem Temple, the Holy of Holies was also called the dvir and it contained the Foundation Stone (or Cornerstone) of the Temple Mount, over which now stands the Muslim Dome of the Rock. According to the Talmud, the Lord began the Creation of the world with him. The holy of holies in Judaism was characterized as a place where the presence of God is physically felt.

Random phraseology:

Cinderella.

Meaning:

A household name for a hardworking girl who finds happiness.

Origin:

Cinderella, Sandrillon - the heroine of a fairy tale known among different European peoples - Cinderella (English), Aschenputtel or Aschenbrodel (German "stained with ashes"), Cendrillon (French, from cendre - "ash" or "ash"). This hard-working, kind girl who does all the dirty work around the house is constantly offended by her evil stepmother and her evil, lazy daughters. But in the end, goodness triumphs: the stepmother and sisters are punished, and Cinderella, with whom the prince falls in love, becomes a princess. At the end of the XVII century. the French writer Charles Perrault (1628-1703) made a literary adaptation of this tale, called it "Cinderella, or Shoes trimmed with fur" and included it in his collection "Tales of my mother the Goose, or Stories and tales of bygone times with morals" (1697) . In the original, we are talking about just such shoes trimmed with fur, one of which Cinderella loses, hurrying to leave the ball in the palace as soon as possible. In the Russian translation, we are talking about a glass slipper, and the reason for this is a translation error, since in French "glass" (crystal) sounds and is written almost the same as the old French, from the time of Perrault, the word "fur".

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The order will be delivered by drone 06.12.2013

Amazon is about to launch a new service - Prime Air. If the buyer chooses this method of delivery of goods from the online store, then within 30 minutes the purchase will be delivered by a drone robot. It is planned to launch this service in American cities in the next 4-5 years.

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos told CBS about this. He believes that the new delivery method will be introduced to his company within 4-5 years.

Bezos said that the delivery will be fully automated. Human participation will be required only in the warehouse: the employee will need to take the product from the shelf, place it in a container, and then simply put it on the conveyor belt. The drone will automatically pick up the container at the other end of the belt and deliver it to the right address.

A drone delivery service called Prime Air will be a separate option when ordering the product. The delivery time of the goods when choosing a service is no more than 30 minutes.

Prime Air is being developed by Amazon's research department. In addition, the company is negotiating with the FAA - the US Federal Aviation Administration to obtain permission for the commercial operation of drones. Amazon expects the FAA to formulate all requirements by 2015.

Amazon said in a statement about the new service: "One day, Prime Air drones in the air will be as commonplace as trucks on the road."
