You can't see the most important thing with your eyes

Antoine de Saint-Exupery
Antoine de Saint-Exupery

Phraseologism: You can't see the most important thing with your eyes.

Meaning: It is cited as a call to what to see and understand with the "heart" - this is the only way to understand and catch the moods, feelings of another person.

Origin: From French: "L" essentiel est invisible pour les yeux". From the story "The Little Prince" (1943) by the French military pilot and writer Antoine de Saint-Exupery (1900-1944). The words of the Fox addressed to the Little Prince: "Sharp one just a heart. You can't see the most important thing with your eyes."

Random phraseology:

New Russians.

Meaning:

Russian businessmen of the 1990s.

Origin:

From English: New Russians. The title of an essay book ("The New Russians", 1990) by the famous American journalist Hedrick Smith. This is the second book in a kind of journalistic dilogy: in Soviet times, X. Smith, being a correspondent in Moscow, wrote the book "The Russians", which gained great fame. After the beginning of market changes in the USSR and with the advent of rich people, he wrote the book "New Russians". From the title of the book, this expression migrated to the English-language press, and from there to the Russian press. In the "zero" issue of the newspaper "Kommersant-Daily" dated September 7, 1992, the term "new Russians" was proposed to replace the already existing term "new rich" - to refer to "the emerging elite of Russian society" with a "new mentality and [... ] lifestyle "(the editorial article "Who are they? Portrait of a Kommersant reader"). At first, the expression was used in English, but quickly "Russified." "Old Russians" translated this term into their native language and gave it an ironic connotation. The word " new Russians" is formed by analogy with the expression homo novus [xomo novus], known since ancient Rome, that is, "new man" - a person hitherto unknown, of humble origin, who, due to external reasons (special relations with the administration, some dark deals and etc.) has reached wealth or a high position in society. There is also a French expression - nouveau riche [nouveau riche], that is, "new rich" - a person who has suspiciously soon got rich. In the XNUMXth century in Russia, the word "nouveau riche" was popular brightly and meant partly the same as the "new Russians" now. An analogue of the folklore expressions "fast rich" or "fast rich".

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. Fujifilm returns to the black and white film market 15.06.2019

Fujifilm has announced that it is re-entering the black and white film market after ceasing production over a year ago. The new Neopan 100 Acros II film is being developed with the input of "millennials and Generation Z", whom the company calls "new film enthusiasts".

Neopan 100 Acros II film will be available in both 35mm and 120mm formats. Fujifilm says the Super Fine-Σ technology delivers less grain and greater clarity compared to the original Neopan 100 Acros film. Fujifilm will begin selling the new film in Japan this fall, with expansion to other markets based on demand.

This news is notable because film photography enthusiasts have come to expect only bad news from film manufacturers. Fujifilm is one of the few remaining such manufacturers. Earlier this year, Fujifilm announced a 30% price increase for film photography products. The company also often stops making film altogether, as was the case with its monochrome line last year.
