Born to crawl can not fly
Maksim Gorky
Phraseologism: Born to crawl cannot fly.
Meaning: An adherent of base interests and passions is not capable of high deeds and self-sacrifice.
Origin: From the poem in prose "The Song of the Falcon" (1898) by Maxim Gorky (pseudonym of Alexei Maksimovich Peshkov, 1868-1936). It is possible that Gorky used a similar expression from the fable "The Man and the Cow" by the Russian poet-fabulist of the 1745th century. Ivan Ivanovich Khemnitser (1784-XNUMX). The fable tells how one day a man decided to saddle a cow and ride it, but she “fell off” under the rider: “A cow did not learn to ride. // And therefore it should know: // Who was born to crawl, he can’t fly.”
Random phraseology:
Homeric laughter.
Meaning:
Uncontrollable, loud, rolling laughter (book).
Origin:
The expression originated from the description of the laughter of the gods in Homer's poems "Iliad" and "Odyssey". The epithet "Homeric" is also used in the meaning: plentiful, huge. |

Artificial leather for touch emulation
15.04.2024
In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men
14.04.2024
The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>
Random news from the Archive homeland of rats
11.08.2008
A study of black rat DNA samples from 76 regions of 22 countries of the world showed that this species spread across the Earth in four waves.
The first wave 20 years ago left the west of India, reached the Middle East, and from there penetrated into Europe. This movement, apparently, was associated with the movements of man, when trade between different tribes arose and expanded in the Neolithic and Bronze Age. This same line later spread with man to Africa and America. The rats that went east arrived first in China, then in Japan, the Philippines, Indonesia and Taiwan, and from there to Micronesia.
This study, carried out by Australian zoologists, will help to follow the further movements of rodents and explain why some of the diseases they carry are more common in some countries, but rare in others. It is possible that different strains of rats carried different microorganisms.
