A rare bird

Decim Junius Juvenal
Decim Junius Juvenal

Phraseologism: Rare bird.

Meaning: A rare, extraordinary person.

Origin: From Latin: Rara avis. From the satires of Roman poets, in particular Juvenal (Decim Junius Juvenal, c. 60-127): "A rare bird on earth, sort of like a black swan."

Random phraseology:

Lion's share.

Meaning:

About the right of the strong.

Origin:

The expression goes back to the fable "Lion, Fox and Eagle" by the legendary ancient Greek fabulist Aesop (VI BC), who tells how these three predators divide their prey. Later, the same plot was used by other authors - Phaedrus and La Fontaine. The Russian fabulist I. A. Krylov developed the same theme. In his fable "The Lion at the Catching" (1808), four heroes - the Lion, the Wolf, the Fox and the Dog - agreed that they would "catch" the animals (that is, hunt) together, and share the prey equally. When the Wolf, the Fox and the Dog drove the deer, the Lion approached them and began a "fair" division: "We, brothers, are four." // And for four he tears the deer apart. // "Now let's share! Look, friends: // This part is mine // By agreement, // This part belongs to me, like a Leo, without a dispute, // This one belongs to me because I am stronger than all, / / And to this little one of you only a paw will be stretched out, / He will not get up from his place alive.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Electronic noses for livestock farms 06.01.2022

A research team from the Department of Educational Technology, Institute of Livestock Environmental Management, Korea, has developed a livestock odor monitoring system using information and communication technology and an ammonia sensor.

With the development of large intensive livestock farms, interest in odor control has increased significantly. Farm animal odors contain many compounds such as ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, volatile fatty acids and p-cresol. Ammonia is the most common smelling compound.

Due to the rather frequent cases of complaints about odors from livestock, especially near large farms, research on monitoring this parameter is expanding. Electronic nose (e-nose) systems have recently emerged as a technology and are now undergoing quantitative validation studies in poultry and pig farms, mainly.

The electronic nose is an alternative technology that provides advantages such as quantitative analysis, fast measurement, high sensitivity and reproducibility of results, and objective, unbiased odor identification.

A study conducted by the staff of the Korean Institute of Livestock Environmental Management examined the relevance of a USN (Ubiquitous Sensor Network) based livestock odor monitoring system that can automatically and remotely monitor livestock odors as a service related to the livestock industry using artificial intelligence and sensors. .

The livestock odor monitoring system consists of two main components - LOMS and LOCS.

LOMS, livestock odor measurement equipment, mainly consists of sensors (an electrochemical sensor for ammonia detection and a sensor for temperature and humidity detection). It also includes a control unit for the operation of the sensors, a communication unit for transmitting the measured data to a central monitoring system and a casing to protect the device. Each location has 2 to 4 measurement points. Moreover, this system is usually installed on the border of a farm or a pigsty. Ammonia data is generated every 30 minutes from the measuring equipment and transmitted to the server.

LOCS is a system consisting of monitoring data transmitted to a server. This server stores the data and the user work program can use real-time validation and control. The main functions include monitoring for data management, sensor information function for sensor management, statistical analysis and data management function, and other management nuances.

Using this technology, the farm manager can directly test the ammonia produced to reduce or prevent odors in certain areas or individual livestock farms where there are many complaints.

The electronic nose will achieve two goals: improve the public perception of livestock farms and animal welfare.
