Divide and Conquer

Louis XI
Louis XI

Phraseologism: Divide and rule.

Meaning: The principle of disengagement of allies for the purpose of their simple destruction or subjugation.

Origin: From Latin: "Divide et impera". It is generally accepted that this was the motto of the foreign policy of Ancient Rome, but no evidence of this was found from ancient authors. The German poet Heinrich Heine (letter from Paris dated January 12, 1842) believed that the author of this motto was the Macedonian king (359-336 BC) Philip (382-336 BC), father of Alexander the Great. It is believed that the first ruler to officially use this phrase was the French king Louis XI (1423-1483), who said: "Diviser pour regner" - "Divide in order to reign." The expression became widely known thanks to the French economist and philosopher Pierre Joseph Proudhon (1809-1865), who sneered: "Divide et impera, divide and rule, divide and you will reign, divide and you will become rich, divide and you will deceive people and you will blind their minds, and you will mock justice."

Random phraseology:

Dancing to someone else's tune.

Meaning:

Obey someone else's will, blindly follow someone else's opinion.

Origin:

It is first encountered by the "father of history", the ancient Greek historian Herodotus (11th century BC), who in the first book of his "History" cites the following episode from the biography of the Persian king Cyrus. When Cyrus conquered the Greek Medes, the Greeks of Asia Minor, whom he had previously unsuccessfully persuaded to an alliance with Persia, hastened to declare their consent. Then the Persian king told their messengers a fable, which is attributed to the ancient Greek fabulist Aesop (VI century BC): hoping, he took the net, threw it and pulled out a lot of fish.Seeing how the fish are fighting in the nets, he said to them: "Stop dancing, when I played the flute, you did not want to go out and dance. "Almost unchanged, this expression entered into So, in the Gospel of Matthew (17:7) and the Gospel of Luke (32:XNUMX) it says: "We played the flute for you, and you did not dance."

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Bacteria-powered nanorobots 27.03.2016

Scientists from Drexel University (USA) have taught microrobots to bypass obstacles in a liquid medium, guided by an electric field.

The robots used in the experiment were microscopic cubes made of light-sensitive polymer material. Since the bacteria had a negative charge, the robot's movement could be controlled by an electric field that set the direction of movement. In the process, the researchers could change both the voltage and the orientation of the field.

The main goal of the scientists was to create an algorithm that takes into account the interaction between the field around the particles and the motion generated by the bacteria.

The fact is that obstacles on the way introduce distortions into the orientation and strength of the electric field, which affects the movement of microrobots. To control them and avoid collisions, the model calculates and controls the particle trajectory, taking into account the influence of obstacles. As a result, bacterial robots can move around in an environment filled with many similarly sized particles.

Such robots, according to scientists, can be used in promising biological projects. Gram-negative bacteria of the serration marcescens species were applied to their surface, which moved the cube.
