Let the killers start first

French
French

Phraseologism: Let the assassins go first.

Meaning: In order not to execute criminals, they must not commit offenses.

Origin: From French: "Que Messieurs les assassins commencent". The words of the French writer Alphonse Jean Kappa (1808-1890), which he spoke during a period of heated discussions in France about the abolition of the death penalty. He spoke out against its abolition by publishing an article in the magazine "Wasps" (January, 1849), which he published, from where this phrase was taken. The meaning of the expression: if the murderers, that is, the criminals, do not kill, they will not be killed either. Thus, the fate of the institution of the death penalty is in their hands. All they have to do to abolish it is to give up their criminal activities. In a word, "let the gentlemen of the murderer start first." Soon after the publication of this article, the phrase became very popular in Russia, where it was usually quoted in the original language.

Random phraseology:

Goof off.

Meaning:

To disgrace, to be in an uncomfortable position.

Origin:

In ancient times, walking bareheaded was considered a disgrace. There was no greater shame for a man when his hat was torn off in a crowded place.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. A new interesting solution from the Petgugu Global startup has been presented, which will make life easier for cat owners and help them keep their home perfectly clean and tidy. Startup Petgugu Global has unveiled a unique cat toilet that can automatically flush feces, keeping your home clean and fresh. This innovative device is equipped with various smart sensors that monitor your pet's toilet activity and activate to automatically clean after use. The device connects to the sewer system and ensures efficient waste removal without the need for intervention from the owner. Additionally, the toilet has a large flushable storage capacity, making it ideal for multi-cat households. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

DNA electronic signature 18.10.2016

A device has been created that can sort single DNA molecules depending on their structure.

Traditional manipulations with DNA took place in a liquid medium: copying molecules, separating a mixture of molecules along the length using electrophoresis, sequencing. Then came what are called "new generation methods", they allow you to work with single molecules, and it is no longer necessary to prepare solutions.

Passing through a nanoporous electrically conductive membrane, a DNA molecule generates electric current fluctuations. They were called "squiggles", which can be translated as "scribbles" - seemingly random lines on a graph of current changes over time. However, they are not random: each nucleotide sequence has its own squiggles. Until recently, this phenomenon was a kind of exotic, the subject of discussions of theorists, but now the specialists of the company "Oxford Nanopore Technologies" have embodied it in a real portable device for "dry" sequencing called MinION. Software for reading the sequence has already been created, and the device itself flew to the ISS, where it was tested for its performance in microgravity conditions.

Researchers from the University of Nottingham, led by Dr. Matthew Luz, have created a signature library that contains many interesting DNA sections for the researcher - this allows you to recognize a molecule faster than it passes through a pore. By consulting the library, DNA molecules can be sorted, rejected, sequencing can be stopped after the desired nucleotide sequence is found - for example, the presence of a pathogenic microbe in the sample is confirmed. Dr. Luz hopes the method will find a variety of applications, including being used to accurately read parts of the human genome that are of interest to a doctor or scientist.
