Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

gentle robot 24.04.2013

As part of the European project AMARSI, researchers from the Italian Institute of Technology have created a robot that can be safely left with children.

The humanoid robot COMAN differs from most machines in that it can maintain an upright position in a variety of conditions and at the same time control the strength of its limbs. This means that COMAN can be near the weakest people and will not injure them by careless movement or falling. The safety of COMAN is emphasized even by its size - it is the size of a child and has an anthropomorphic body, although so far without a head.

Most robots designed to work with humans are still quite dangerous. Powerful actuators, rigid bodies and manipulators can in themselves cause injury to the unwary. In addition, a mistake in the movement of the robot can lead to its fall: the sad ending is to be crushed by the 200-kg "carcasses" of your own housekeeper robot.

Italian engineers have found their way out of this situation. They created a special type of power drive based on small elastic rods, torque sensors and continuous computer analysis of movements. Thanks to this, COMAN can move smoothly and respond very quickly to external events such as shocks, movement on an inclined plane, etc.

Interaction with the 94,5 cm and 31,2 kg COMAN robot is very similar to the interaction with a child: the robot gently reacts to movements, but at the same time tries to maintain balance when you take it by the hand, drag it along with you, etc. Thanks to soft actuators, the movements of the arms and legs of the robot look natural: it can instantly completely "relax" the limbs and avoid injury to the person.

The developers hope that robots like COMAN will become faithful assistants to people in the near future. And not only on the battlefield, in production or in a natural disaster zone, but also at home.
