Habit is second nature

Aristotle
Aristotle

Phraseologism: Habit is second nature.

Meaning: The habitual is as difficult to give up as it is to change the character, a series of stable habits forms part of the character.

Origin: From Latin: Consuetudo est altera natura. For the first time it is found in the work of the great philosopher of Ancient Greece Aristotle "Rhetoric" in the form: "The habit is already becoming a natural property." The Roman statesman and orator Cicero (Mark Tullius Cicero, 106-43 BC), apparently inspired by Aristotelian thought, writes in his essay "On the Limits of Good and Evil": "Habit is, as it were, second nature." The same idea was expressed by the theologian and founder of medieval philosophy Blessed Augustine (353-430) in his work "Against Julian": "Habit is second nature." In his version, this phrase became winged.

Random phraseology:

Storm the sky.

Meaning:

Build and implement the most daring plans.

Origin:

From a letter from Karl Marx (1818-1883) to a member of the First International Ludwig Kugelmann dated April 12, 1871. Marx writes about the heroes of the Paris Commune, who, unlike the cowardly inhabitants, are ready to "storm the sky", that is, to do the impossible: "Let them compare with these Parisians ready to storm the sky, the serfs of the German-Prussian Holy Roman Empire with its antediluvian masquerades reeking of barracks, church, Junkerism, and most of all philistinism. Probably, this expression is based on the famous ancient Greek myth about Icarus.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

The Vaccine Mystery 04.10.2016

The flu vaccine reduces the risk of stroke in diabetics but increases it in heart patients.

It would seem that the flu is weakly associated with a stroke or heart attack: everyone knows that if you endure a cold on your feet, you can get an unpleasant complication, but if you follow the doctor's requirements, it is unlikely. However, modern medical statistics allows you to look for completely non-obvious connections between events. So, researchers from London's King's College, led by Dr. Esther Vamo, worked with British statistics for 2003-2010 and chose among patients those who suffer from type 2 diabetes. There are more than 123 thousand such patients in the database.

Analysis of the data showed that annual flu vaccination reduced their risk of heart attack and stroke by 22% and 30%, respectively. Moreover, the mortality among them was 24% less. From the flu, protection worked worse - the number of visits to the clinic for influenza and pneumonia decreased by 15%.

What does it mean to get vaccinated against the flu to protect yourself from a stroke or heart attack? There is a pitfall here, noticed by the same researchers: the vaccine has a miraculous effect only on diabetics. And in the cores, the vaccine, on the contrary, increases the risks. The answer to the question why this happens, the doctors do not.
