Funeral (of the bill) in the first category

Otto von Bismarck
Otto von Bismarck

Phraseologism: Funeral (of the bill) on the first category.

Meaning: The failure of the case under the guise of its diligent, formal execution (jokingly ironic).

Origin: The primary source is the memoirs of the "Iron Chancellor" of Germany, Otto Eduard Leopold Bismarck (1815-1898). There he ironically called "first-class funerals" the honors with which Emperor Wilhelm accompanied his resignation (March 1890). In Russia, this phrase became widely used thanks to State Duma deputy Vladimir Mitrofanovich Purishkevich (1870-1920), who used this Bismarckian expression in relation to Russian parliamentary practice. The rightists, Purishkevich's comrades-in-arms, if they wanted to thwart a bill they didn't like, sought to submit it (for approval) to the Duma committee or a special commission, where this document was rejected after "careful consideration." V. M. Purishkevich called it "the funeral of a bill in the first category" - and decency was observed, and the deed was done.

Random phraseology:

The case is tobacco.

Meaning:

Dangerous, critical situation.

Origin:

It comes from the custom of barge haulers at the entrance to the water to tie a tobacco pouch around their neck so as not to get wet. When it became so deep that the water came up to the neck, they shouted - tobacco!

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. A new interesting solution from the Petgugu Global startup has been presented, which will make life easier for cat owners and help them keep their home perfectly clean and tidy. Startup Petgugu Global has unveiled a unique cat toilet that can automatically flush feces, keeping your home clean and fresh. This innovative device is equipped with various smart sensors that monitor your pet's toilet activity and activate to automatically clean after use. The device connects to the sewer system and ensures efficient waste removal without the need for intervention from the owner. Additionally, the toilet has a large flushable storage capacity, making it ideal for multi-cat households. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Engine made of molecules 02.08.2012

PhD student Nick Vukotich and his team of researchers have published a study in Nature Chemistry that revolutionizes modern chemistry. Scientists have been able to prove that molecules bound together can perform mechanical work directly inside solid materials. This may become a milestone in the development of computer technology, since it becomes possible to control the electronic properties of materials at the molecular level. In essence, the phenomenon opens up a new path for the development of molecular machines: from nanorobots to new types of electronics.

The discovery was made during the study of a new material UWDM-1 (University of Windsor Dynamic Material) - a powdered substance that contains rotaxane molecules and a binuclear copper complex. Rotaxane molecules are shaped like a wheel with an "axle" threaded through it. But most importantly, heating the UWDM-1 causes the microscopic wheels to begin to rotate rapidly around their axis. When the material cools, they stop moving. All the details of the tiny engine are so small that they cannot be seen under a microscope, so the fact that the wheels rotate was confirmed using magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

This discovery means that molecules in solid crystalline materials can be manipulated and created from them into solid-state molecular switches and molecular machines based on the mechanical blocking of molecules.
