The burden of human passions

William Somerset Maugham
William Somerset Maugham

Phraseologism: The burden of human passions.

Meaning: About the dependence of a person and his fate on his own passions, emotions, etc.

Origin: Russian translation (1959) of the title of the novel ("Of Human Bondage", 1915) by English writer William Somerset Maugham (1874-1965). Translation - E. Golysheva and E. Izakov. It is possible that the idea of this name was suggested to the author by the philosophical work "Ethics" (1677) by the Dutch thinker Benedict (Baruch) Spinoza (1632-1677): the 4th book of his treatise is called: "De servitute Humana, seu de Affectum Viribus" or, in translation of N. A. Ivantsov from Latin, "On human slavery, or On the power of affects."

Title and line from the romance "It's a shame, annoyance..." (1916), written by A. Bakaleinikov to the words of the poet of the Yesenin circle Alexander Borisovich Kusikov (1896-1977): "It's a shame, annoying to tears, to torment."

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

VIPER26K regulators with built-in MOSFET 1050 V 26.11.2019

STMicroelectronics has announced new microcircuits of the well-known ViperPlus family. This is a Viper26K with a built-in 1050V drain-to-source MOSFET.

This family of microcircuits is suitable for building power supplies with a wide range of input voltages, for example, those operating from a three-phase 380 V network.

Chips VIPER26K have two versions - with a transistor current limit of 500 mA and 700 mA. With their help, the following topologies can be implemented: isolated and non-isolated flyback converter (flyback), buck converter (buck), buck-boost converter (buck-boost).

Technical advantages:

Built-in MOSFET with a voltage of 1050 V;
Built-in quick start function;
Built-in short circuit current protection;
Built-in error amplifier for non-isolated topologies;
Consumption at idle no more than 40 mW;
Automatic overtemperature protection with hysteresis;

Main Applications:

IP powered by a three-phase network;
Three-phase electricity meters.
