Phraseologism: Put up a cross.

Meaning: Refuse to do something or expect an event.

Origin: The caste of officials, bureaucrats, paper-scribblers is as indestructible as the state itself. Soldiers and marshals fight, and officials then imperceptibly, on the sly, appropriate the fruits of their military victories. Papers tend to accumulate like parasites. Famusov from A.S. Griboedov's comedy "Woe from Wit" had the following custom: "signed - so off with your shoulders." And the usual stationery "rats", so as not to drown in a pile of papers, in order to separate the already worked out from those that have yet to be studied, marked the first with a bold cross. And this is without any religious hint or subtext! It just made it easier for them to understand. And when we decide to "tie up" with some hopeless case, we also say that we put an end to it - only in a figurative sense and without any written notes.

In the Church Slavonic translation, the word "pearl" sounds like "beads". It was in this version that this biblical expression entered the Russian language.
