Every printed sheet seems to be holy

Dmitriev I.I.
Dmitriev I.I.

Phraseologism: Each printed sheet seems to be holy.

Meaning: It is used as an ironic comment about the naive, blind admiration for everything that is printed (in a book or newspaper), the belief that every thought in printed form receives some evidence of rightness and truth.

Origin: From the satirical poem "Someone else's sense" (1795) by the poet Ivan Ivanovich Dmitriev (1760-1837): "And our many goal is a reward with a ring, // Often a hundred rubles, or friendship with a prince, // Who never read another, // In addition to the courtier, sometimes the month-word, / Or the praise of his friends, and to them / Every printed sheet seems to be holy. A. S. Pushkin (article "The experience of reflecting some non-literary accusations"): "I noticed that the most unfounded judgment, stupid swearing gains weight from the magical influence of the printing house. The printed sheet still seems holy to us. We all think: how can this be stupid or unfair? it's printed."

Random phraseology:

Lovely soul.

Meaning:

A benevolent attitude towards people in which the best qualities are assumed, including mutual goodwill, courtesy, attentiveness, etc.

Origin:

The author of the expression is the critic and publicist Vissarion Grigoryevich Belinsky (1811-1848), who once wrote in a letter (1839) to the writer I. I. Panaev about "beautiful antics." He is also the author of the verb "beautiful" (a letter from V. G. Belinsky to the critic and translator V. P. Botkin dated February 3, 1840). The original source of the expression is the title of one of the chapters ("Confessions of a Beautiful Soul") of the work "The Student Years of Wilhelm Meister" by Johann Wolfgang Goethe (1749-1832).

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Worms against aging 06.01.2020

Scientists from the MDI Laboratory, together with scientists from the Buck Institute for Research on Aging and the University of Nanjing, have discovered synergistic cellular mechanisms that increase lifespan by six times in C. elegans nematodes, which are often used as model organisms in aging research.

Such a life expectancy in worms corresponds to a human life expectancy of 400-500 years.

The study is based on the discovery of two major pathways that drive aging C. elegans, which are popular model organisms in aging research due to their many genes in common with humans, and because of their short lifespan of three to four weeks, allowing researchers to quickly assess the impact of both genetic and environmental factors on life expectancy.

The study used organisms with a double mutation: the insulin signaling pathways and TOR complexes were changed. Altering insulin signaling alone gives a 100% increase in lifespan in nematodes. A separate change to TOR is 30 percent. It was logical to assume that their combined change would give a 130% increase, but instead life expectancy increased by 500%.

The discovery of a synergistic effect in the future will allow the use of combination therapy to prolong life in the same way that various combination therapies are currently used to treat cancer or AIDS. It could also explain why scientists couldn't find a single gene responsible for longevity.
